Advanced practice nurses (APNs) play a critical role in the healthcare system by providing high-quality care, managing patient populations, and leading practice change initiatives. As APNs strive to improve patient outcomes and deliver innovative care, they often face financial barriers that impede the implementation of practice change projects. Identifying grant opportunities is a crucial step in securing funding for practice change initiatives, and it requires a thorough understanding of the literature surrounding the practice problem. This paper explores the process of synthesizing literature to identify practice problems faced APNs and how to identify a potential non-research grant to support their evidence-based practice change initiative.

Practice Problem

Depression-related suicide is a prevalent and critical global public health issue. According to World Health Organization (2021), suicide accounts for over 700,000 deaths annually, making it the fourth leading cause of death in individuals aged 15-29. Depression significantly contributes to the global burden of disease and disability, leading to increased healthcare costs and lost productivity. The total economic burden associated with depression is estimated to be $210 billion annually, making it one of the most costly mental health disorders in the United States (Greenberg et al., 2021).

Practice Change Idea

My proposed practice change idea is to implement evidence-based interventions, suicide risk assessment and depression screening using tools such as Kessler psychological distress scale (K6+) screening tool for mental health disorders in our healthcare setting. This standardized screening tool will help identify individuals at risk of depression-related suicide and allow for early intervention and appropriate referrals (Stolk et al., 2021). This project will also involve comprehensive education and training for nurses on the best practices for depression screening, suicide risk assessment, and evidence-based interventions.

Grant Funding

One potential non-research grantor to support the evidence-based practice change initiative is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). RWJF supports projects that address pressing health and healthcare challenges in the United States (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2023). They offer grants for healthcare delivery system reform initiatives, care coordination, and improving health outcomes. RWJF places a strong emphasis on evidence-based practices and innovation. The grant provides up to $165,000 in funding and requires that the proposed project addresses a significant healthcare challenge.
