Evidence to Support Nursing Practices

Batsis, J. A., DiMilia, P. R., Seo, L. M., Fortuna, K. L., Kennedy, M. A., Blunt, H. B., … & Bartels, S. J. (2019). Effectiveness of ambulatory telemedicine care in older adults: a systematic review. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 67(8), 1737-1749. https://doi.org/10.1111/jgs.15959

Irrespective of specialties, nurses should ensure they use practical interventions relevant to the evolving practice and patient care needs. Such interventions should combine scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values, as evidence-based practice (EBP) recommends. To promote EBP, nursing practitioners should seek knowledge to inform practice from peer-reviewed sources and implement it. In this article, Batsis et al. (2019) evaluated the effectiveness of telemedicine in improving health outcomes among older adults. The primary finding was that telemedicine is a feasible and acceptable approach to delivery care among older adults. The authors also noted that telemedicine use is associated with high patient satisfaction among older adults. Ilali et al. (2023) also found similar results (positive experiences and high patient satisfaction) and recommended nursing professionals to address usability barriers to improve outcomes. I selected this resource due to the potential of telemedicine in supporting patient care for different populations. It is a detailed resource for nursing professionals to explore the usefulness of the technology and how patients perceive it.
