It is important to identify and understand your own family culture in order to be able to understand and respect other cultures. Interview a family member, and an individual from another culture with which you are unfamiliar. Some examples of an individual from another culture to consider for the assignment include a neighbor, coworker, patient, or friend. Please inform the individuals of the purpose of this assignment and make sure you receive their consent.

Review the “Family Interview” template prior to the interview. Additional space is designated on the template for you to create three additional questions to ask both interviewees (family member and person from another culture). Additional questions should be relevant to the readings or discussion and should provide value to the interview by helping to understand culture.

Female is Irish/Presbyterian, raised old fashion, family first, respect, education, expected work hard, father graduated Stanford undergrad and law school, fraternity, worked fulltime and went to school, came back to home town council member, lawyer on hospital board, took care of his parents, Mother was raised with Irish/Episcopalian, graduated UCSB, social world, family first, died young. Do not actively practice religion, raises her family the same way as she was raised. Goals to finish education, own elder health care business and work in real estate, work hard,

Male is English/Catholic, from England, parents worked hard up until they died, they have 2 kids a son and daughter, they are nothing like their parents, haven’t worked in 20 years, no ambition, hasn’t practice Catholicism since he was 18 now 55. No goals

Some of the questions may include:

Family beliefs: Have they changed over generations? Not for the female side, Male side yes.

Educational and occupational status in the culture and in the family

Communication methods: verbal and nonverbal

Current family goals/priorities

Family member roles and organizational systems

Spiritual beliefs: current practice and death and dying

Alternative lifestyles

Work attitudes and structure

Sample Answer

An introductory paragraph with the reasons for selecting the interviewees

I carried out an interview on family culture to compare and contrast different cultures to get a better understanding of them as well as my own culture. The two individuals I have chosen, one is a friend, and another is a coworker. I had to get their consent before I embark on interviewing them. To successfully carry out the interview, I selected two interviewees’ one male and one female. Having different genders will help me acquire information from both perspectives, which will inform my assignment in detail. My female interviewee is a Presbyterian. She is a woman who has been raised in the old fashion way and puts her family first before everything else. My male interviewee is an English man and a catholic from England. His parents were hard workers up until their death. His parents had two kids, a son, and a daughter, and they are nothing like their parents. These two interviewees are my best selection because apart from having different genders, they pose a different lifestyle, family beliefs, spiritual beliefs, and a different attitude when it comes to work, goals, and ambitions. Also, they have different levels of education, which affects their different ways of communication.

A summary of the responses from the interview template gathered from the interviewees.

An overview of my female interviewee is that she is a respectful woman, educated, and earns her living through hard work. According to her, women are expected to work hard for their family too. Additionally, her father is also learned. He graduated from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in law and fraternity. Her father worked fulltime and later came back to take care of his parents. Her mother, too, was raised an Irish or as it is known Episcopalian. Her mother graduated from UCSB as a social worker. Just like her daughter, she puts her family first. Unfortunately, her mother died at a young age. My female interviewee does not practice religion, and she raises her family the same way she was raised. Her goal is to complete her education, work in real estate, and one day own an elderly healthcare facility.

A summary of my male interviewee is that he has not been able to find work for 20 years. He has no goals in life and has never practiced Catholicism since he was 18 years. He is now 55 years but guess what? He has no goals in life at all! When I asked about family beliefs, and if they have changed, he stated that family beliefs had changed a lot for them. As much as they were raised in England, where Catholicism is the highest religion of all, he chose not to follow the footsteps of his parents. He decided to create his path of life and live life as it comes.

A comparison and contrast of your findings between the two interviewees.

My female employee is educated and has ambitions for herself. She works hard to meet them. Based on the interview, learning has been given the highest priority, and she endeavors to do the same. Right from her parents, she believes in hard work. Her family beliefs have not changed. Her father left the job to take care of his parents. For her part, she wants to finish school and open elderly healthcare to take care of the elderly. That is her current family goal and her priority besides completing her education. Based on the interview, my female interviewee does not practice religion actively as her parents. She still has her father, who is alive, but she lost her other at a young age. Her attitude toward work is positive and admirable. Also, her lifestyle is influenced by her handwork and her goals. Her education makes her a verbal communicator. She can express herself eloquently and persuasively.

On the other hand, my male interviewee is not learned at all. Also, there is no mention of anyone in his family got educated, including his parents. That is why he has no ambition in life and no goals to attain. It, therefore, explains why he communicates more in a non-verbal manner. He is a man that does not follow his family culture. It can be said that he abandoned religion altogether. Moreover, he is a man who has no family goals or priorities. His parents were hard workers until they died. From the interview, he does not have any parent alive. They are only the two of them – him and his sister. Unfortunately, the two are nothing like their parents. It appears they are not learned, not hardworking, and just passing the time. My male interviewee is raised a catholic, but he has never practiced Catholicism since he was 18 years of age. It makes me believe that as soon as his parents died, that was the end of him and spiritual beliefs.  His lifestyle is not known because he has no mentioned anything he is doing with his life. It, therefore, shows that his attitude towards life is negative and meaningless.

How family roles affect the cultural domains and relationships for each individual.

Family culture can be a unique way of acting, judging, thinking, lifestyle, feeling, and mindset. When children are born, they are molded into the family culture. Their culture influences their thinking and their view of what is good or bad. As they grow, their assumptions towards life reflect their beliefs, traditions, and values of their families. Some like our male interviewees do take for granted these family ways of life. These are the people who later develop attitudes, and particular behavior that emerged during their childhood that destroys their moral compass. Others, like our female interviewee, do take seriously the values imparted to them by their parents and transforms their lives being guided by their family values. However, families are always in a constant state of change, and every member of the family goes through different cycles of life as they develop from one stage of life to the other. Births, marriages, divorce, and death can change the family progression on a greater magnitude, which can shift the family culture entirely (Feinberg, Kan & Goslin, 2009). Probably the reason why the male interviewee viewed life as meaningless, causing him to build nothing for himself, was because the people he depended on them left him with nothing even after they have worked hard their entire life. Also, to note is that family members shape roles and priorities in life for both boys and girls. For instance, the boys or girls raised in the family where the mother and other aunts are professional women in the society are exposed to a different culture than the one their grandparents experienced. This is true for the case of my female interviewee.
