Interview Summary

The interviewed health professional is a staff nurse in the emergency room (ER) at Mcleod Health Dillon. Her name is Ashley Bailey and one of the nurses in the 20-bed ER unit at the hospital. Mcleod is a smaller hospital based off their main hospital Mcleod Health Florence. Ashley is responsible for the flow of emergency room as handling of concerns and complaints. Her roles and duties also include patient care, patient assessment, and medication administration. She works alongside the registration nurse whose duties include collecting correct patient data and recording in the system. The provider in the facility is Dr. Daniel Crabtree who assesses patients, gives order to the nurse and work alongside nurses in patient care provision.

The ER is always a busy area that requires effective management of time. During the interview, Ashley discussed the issue of time management as critical. She mentions the time taken in getting a bed for patients with chest pain, registration time to have patients in the system and time used for order to be given to patients. Miss Bailey also mentioned the need for effective communication among the different healthcare workers in the facility. One way to approach designing an improvement project is to use the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement describes it thus:

The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle is shorthand for testing a change in the real work setting—by planning it, trying it, observing the results, and acting on what is learned. This is the scientific method adapted for action-oriented learning…Essentially, the PDSA cycle helps you test out change ideas on a smaller scale before evaluating the results and making adjustments before potentially launching into a somewhat larger scale project (n.d.).
