Men Should Get Paid More Than Women

In the modern labor force, men and women are represented to an almost equal degree. Historically, men comprised the majority of the workforce but over the years the percentage of employed women rose steadily. For instance, men traditionally took up the more masculine jobs, that is, jobs that required high levels of technical knowledge or physical exertion. Women mostly took up jobs that were considered feminine and required less technical knowledge and minimal physical strain. However, women have made considerable headways into traditionally-masculine job groups. As such, the issue of how each gender should be paid has become a highly contentious topic in modern society. The first school of thought is that men should be paid more than women while the opponents of the position argue that women should be paid at equal levels to men. Current statistics show that men, on average, men around the world are paid more than women. Statistics by the World Economic Forum indicate that on average, working men receive an annual pay of around $23,000 (Tyson & Parker, 2019). On the other hand, women earn an average of around $12,000 annually. Therefore, a man earns around twice what a woman in the workforce earns on average. There are several reasons for the existence of the gender pay gap. The line of argument taken here is that there are genuine, rational reasons for the existence of the gender pay gap and that men should be paid more than women.

The first reason why men should be paid more than women is that men are still the main breadwinners in families (Sherburne, 2020). A breadwinner can be understood to be the person in a family who is the main income earner and provider. Therefore, the income of the breadwinner offers the main means of support for the family. Throughout history and unto the present day, men have generally assumed the roles of breadwinners in their families. Married men assumed the roles of breadwinners because of the reality of gender roles in society. In the marriage setting, the husband naturally assumes the position of a breadwinner with the expectation that they will look for means to take care of their wife and children. Conversely, the decision of gender roles comes with the expectation that wives will take care of and raise the children while supporting their husbands in different ways. In pre-historic times, the man was expected to engage in hunting and gathering activities to feed their family. While in modern times, the man is not expected to hunt and gather, they are expected to work, earn and provide for their family. A report by the Institute of Family Studies indicated that men are still recognized as breadwinners or expected to be breadwinners in around 90% of heterosexual families around the US (ElHage, 2016). The figure indicates that men still shoulder the heavy burden of providing for their families. The figure also indicates that while the wife may be the breadwinner in the family, there is a general expectation that the husband should be the breadwinner. Therefore, men should be paid more than women to allow them to adequately and effectively fulfill their role of providing for the family. Paying men equal pay to women or lower than women only works to inhibit men in their breadwinner roles in the family. This reality should reflect in the workforce where men should get paid more than women.

The second reason why men should be paid more than women is that men generally take up jobs that have higher physical strain. As mentioned in the opening statement, men traditionally assumed work roles that required more technical know-how and considerable physical strain (White, 2021). In the modern workforce setup, men are still more represented in jobs that require physical exertion to person. An occupational breakdown of jobs by gender shows reveals that men have a representation of 70% or higher in physically straining jobs like construction, mechanics, carpentry, joinery, plumbing, machine operation, and metalworking. On the other hand, women have a representation of over 70% in jobs that require less physical strain such as health care workers, social workers, educators, assistants, psychologists, and clerks. Therefore, there is a clear separation in terms of the nature of jobs carried out by men and women in the labor force with men taking up jobs that come with greater physical strain than the jobs taken up by women. The evidence also shows that women have minimal representation in jobs that have been recognized as the most physically demanding. For instance, the organization Insurance Providers notes that the most demanding jobs include derrick workers, athletes, building construction, iron and steel workers, construction laborers, and firefighters (Routhier & Walker, 2021). The jobs listed as the most physically demanding are jobs that have a high proportion of male workers. Physically demanding jobs take a heavy toll on the health and wellbeing of male workers. Consequently, men should be paid more than women because they take up jobs that present a considerable strain on their bodies.

Thirdly, men should be paid more than women because men tend to perform jobs that are more dangerous and riskier than jobs generally performed by women. A dangerous or risky job is one where there is a high probability of physical injury or even death (White, 2021). Men have generally tended to take up jobs that are considered dangerous. Throughout human existence, men have assumed jobs that came with a greater risk to self than the jobs that women have taken up. According to CNBC, men make up the majority in dangerous jobs like logging, fishing, piloting, roofing, garbage collection, iron and steel working, electrical works, and truck driving (Ward, 2017). Men are more likely to die or get injured in their job. According to Forbes magazine, men are ten times more likely to be killed at work as compared to women (DeVore, 2018). Forbes was offering reporting on statistics provided by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics which broke down the prevalence of fatal occupational injuries across occupations. It makes sense that a job position that comes with a greater risk of physical injury or even death should come with higher pay than a job that has minimal risk of physical injury and death. Therefore, since men occupy jobs that are comparatively more dangerous than those occupied by women, men should be paid more than women. The higher pay will allow men to grapple with the immense risk that comes with dangerous jobs.

The fourth reason why men should be paid more than women is that on average, men tend to work more hours than women. One of the main considerations for a worker’s pay level is the amount of time that they put into their work. Workers who clock more work hours should be paid more than workers who clock fewer work hours. Statistics indicate that men work longer hours each week compared to women. Figures provided by the US Department of Labor show that men work an average of 41.0 hours each week while women complete an average of 36.3 hours each week (Taei, 2019). Men who are married and with children will tend to work longer each week than married women and unmarried men. Men work longer hours for several reasons. Firstly, men work longer work hours because gender roles in society require men to be the primary providers in their families. Therefore, since men tend to work longer work hours, their productivity at work is higher than that of women. As such, it makes sense for employers to pay men more since they will work longer hours and provide greater benefits to companies than women. Men also work longer work hours than women because women take longer parental leave than men (Thorpe, 2019). Women will take parental leave to have birth or take care of children. The maternity leave period provided to women is longer than the paternity leave period offered to men. As such, women will record fewer work hours on average as compared to men over the lifetime of their employment. Therefore, since men will work longer work hours than women, it is only fair that they receive greater pay than women because of their input as well as dedication to work.

Proponents of the idea of equal pay for men and women argue that there should be parity in pay between the sexes to promote fairness and equality. The argument is that if men and women do the same job, they should be paid on equal terms regardless of other factors (Werft, 2017). While the idea that all people, men, and women, should be paid equally is noble, it ignores the realities of gender roles in society. As noted earlier, 90% of men in marriages are expected to fulfill the role of primary breadwinners in their families with only 10% of women expected to be breadwinners. In this way, equal pay for men and women would only work to disadvantage men since their incomes are expected to support the family unit while there is less expectation that women should support the family.

There is a clear case for men deserving higher pay than women. Firstly. Men should get paid more than women because society still requires men to be the main breadwinners of the family. The expectation that men should be the primary providers for the family means that men deserve to receive higher wages than women. Secondly, men should be paid more than women because men tend to fulfill work responsibilities that require greater physical strain than the jobs generally undertaken by women. Physical exertion at work has a heavy toll on the health and wellbeing of men which follows that men should be paid more than women on account of the physical strain suffered. Thirdly, men should be paid more than women because the most dangerous and riskiest jobs are disproportionately occupied by men. Since such jobs come with a greater risk of injury and death, men should be paid more than women. Finally, men should be paid more than women because men on average record more work hours than women.
