Academic integrity is a critical aspect of quality learning for nursing students at the Grand Canyon University (GCU) pursuing the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Plagiarism is a form of academic offense that involves a student producing their work in a dishonest manner using various forms. Plagiarism include copying and pasting work from others, quoting sources without proper acknowledgement and citation, and failure to paraphrase properly when using a source, as well as submitting someone’s work or having someone do assignments on your behalf (Amsberry, 2022). This means that one maintains the wording closely like in the original work. The implication is that plagiarism affects overall integrity of a baccalaureate degree since it distorts the quality of work produced by a student. Plagiarism demonstrates dishonesty and inability of one to do their own work and enhance their understanding of nursing concepts and what is expected by the faculty (Miller-Rosser et al., 2021). For instance, turning in someone else’s work means taking credit for ideas that are not yours, even when they are not published elsewhere. Plagiarism undermines one’s learning experience and compromises personal integrity as a student.
Plagiarism also affects public perception of the nursing profession as health populations and patients may not feel safe being served by nurses who have do not believe in their own work. Plagiarism can also affect the use of evidence-based practice as nurses may lack sufficient skills to apply research findings in their clinical practice environment. Nurses use evidence-based practice (EBP) when they can interpret research findings and tailor interventions to meet patient needs (Levitt, 2020). Therefore, they should always produce original work as opposed to engaging in plagiarism since it shows dishonesty that can affect patient safety in the long term.
The American Psychological Association (APA) provides tools that nursing students can use to attain academic integrity in their work and studies. These include properly citing sources used in the latest APA style, and having a reference list with all the sources arranged in alphabetical order (Beins, 2020). The APA also provides a website where one can understand effective paraphrasing and citations as well as a manual on all aspects of academic integrity.
