The identified practice problem is suicide, usually attributed to mental health problems. My critical question regarding the topic is: Does promoting mental health awareness reduce the incidence of suicide? After conducting an extensive literature review, I identified various articles that examined the impact of mental health awareness on mental health, including suicide rates in various age groups across the lifespan. Generally, the articles established that mental health awareness significantly helps individuals with mental health symptoms to overcome social stigma and access treatment.

Mental health awareness helps in early diagnosis and treatment, which prevents mental health symptoms from progressing to more hard-to-treat conditions and suicide. For example, Siddique et al. (2022) found that increasing mental health awareness among adolescents led to more empathy and sensitivity toward those with mental health problems. Singh et al. (2022) found mounting evidence that interventions to promote mental health improve mental health, decrease the risk of developing mental illnesses, reduce suicide rates, and have socioeconomic benefits.

Based on my synthesis of evidence, it is evident that inadequate knowledge and associated social stigma negatively affect mental health. Besides, a lack of knowledge of mental health often contributes to stigmatizing attitudes toward mental illnesses or creates a barrier to the access and delivery of mental health care. On the other hand, engaging mentally ill persons can lead to positive attitudes and enlightened perspectives. Thus, there is a need for a practice change for mental health promotion initiatives. According to Henry (2021), mental health promotion interventions should aim to increase mental health awareness, lower mental health stigma, improve accessibility to quality mental health services and promote research to improve innovative treatments.
