Nurses are tasked with a significant role to play in delivering care to patients. Generally, nurses spend a great percentage of time with patients subject to their different stages of hospitalization. The recent development of health information technology has significantly impacted nurses since most nurses have adopted various technologies subject to the provision of care. Thus, it is of significance that nurses have to be part of the with regards to the adoption of health information technology alongside its implementation. The system development life cycle (SDLC) is described as being an approach that is utilized during the implementation of health information technology. The adoption of SDLC is significant basing on the fact that it enhances the capturing of the ever-changing system requirements through getting feedback from the users of the system alongside the cognitive-social technical aspects incorporation in five key stages with the objective of meeting the needs of the system users. My essay focuses on the role description of a graduate-level practising nurse that takes part during the implementation of the SDLC approach in nursing (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021).
This is the first phase of the SDLC process, which entails the definition of the scope and problems, the examination of the probable alternatives, while consequently selecting the best course of action through feasibility tests performance, creation of project schedule, gathering the resources required for the project, and launching the project. Thus, a nurse in the SDLC implementation team is tasked with a significant role during this phase. Their roles include working with the interdisciplinary team in establishing the project share deliverables, working with the interdisciplinary team in determining the project requirements with the inclusion of medication, clinical, and technical requirements. Additionally, during this phase, a nurse is tasked with the role of working with the interdisciplinary team in conducting the project’s feasibility studies (Mcgonigle, 2017).
The second phase is described as the analysis phase during an SDLC and implementation process. This phase entails the prioritization of the necessities of the project, entailing the development and assessment of the possible course of actions, reviewing the organizations’ policies while consequently coming up with recommendations to be adopted by the organization. Here nurses have different roles, including working with the interdisciplinary team in developing the list of priority project requirements, working with the interdisciplinary team subject to the development and evaluation of possible alternatives, and working with the interdisciplinary team on establishing the recommendations with regards to moving forward (Saba & McCormick, 2011).
This phase entails the role of nurses in designing the new system. The designing phase is concerned with the architecture and operation of the health information technology that the organization adopts subject to the processes, user interface, networking, data retrieval, hardware, software, among others. Here, the role of nurses has a limitation to other interdisciplinary team members, for instance, IT specialists, informatics nurses, and vendors that take control of the stage. During the new system designing phase, nurses are tasked with the mandate of studying and understanding both the purpose and system interactions (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021).
This is the implementation phase of the SDLC process. The tasks involved during the implementation phase include the customization of the system while consequently installing the new health information technology system. During the implementation phase of the SDLC, nurses are mandated with various roles, including working with the interdisciplinary team subject to system performance evaluations. Secondly, working with the interdisciplinary team in redesigning the system in a case scenario whereby the evaluation may deem it to be necessary. Third, providing feedback subject to the working of the system, and lastly, working with the interdisciplinary team in providing training to other staff in the organization (Mcgonigle, 2017).
The final phase of the SDLC development and implementation process is described as the post-implementation support phase. Nurses are tasked with different roles during this phase. In health information technology, the concept of support and maintenance has been described as being a continuous process with the major task to nurses subject to the implementation support phase. The nurses are tasked with various roles, including working with the interdisciplinary team in the provision of continuous system evaluation alongside the need for changes. Additionally, nurses are tasked with working with the interdisciplinary team in the provision of ongoing training and support, consequently assisting in boosting new system acceptance (Saba & McCormick, 2011).
