Parent/Family Engagement in the School Nurses Services/Programs

As always, review the rubric! Also see the course syllabus also for detail on the paper, and consider any additional comments your faculty may share with you.  Here are some highlights to guide this section of the paper.

This part of the paper has two key areas to consider, the significance of the issue and introducing the proposed solution. Appropriate disciplinary literature (e.g., nursing practice, nursing administration) should be included here to document the issue and solutions.

Introduce your topic and discuss how it was identified.

Search for and present a review of literature about this issue and discuss its significance. Why is this topic important? What are the key problems and associated costs?

Next present literature you find that discusses best practice/EBP solutions to this issue.  You should have a fair number of sources included here! (There is no specific correct number, but less than 5 is likely too few!) Citations that support things like why your topic is an important concern, and possibly past intervention efforts to address this concern. You might not always be able to find literature that is an exact match for your problem, but you should then search as needed and reflect on similar literature that is available. Note that as you are reviewing possible solutions (i.e., alternatives/options for this issue), and you should conclude by introducing a proposed solution. Note that the closing idea here is introducing the solution – which is not detailing that full plan. For example, there is a significant difference between introducing a proposed solution that an ‘staff in-service’ module should be created, and actually creating the full in-service module.

All formal papers should be written using APA format. In addition to the use of correct spelling and grammar, this includes citing statements made as facts within the paper narrative, and correctly listing citations in the reference list. You should also use headings to create clear content sections within your paper, (ideally aligned with the rubric!).

Introduction

The purpose of this project is to explore the impact of parent/family engagement on students’ health outcomes in nursing school. This project came as a result of my clinical rotation in a school district and identified that there is a lack of parent/family engagement programs. I was interested in exploring the impact of such programs on students’ health outcomes because it is an area that is often overlooked. There are various negative health outcomes associated with a lack of parent/family engagement, such as increased absenteeism, lower grades, and higher rates of behavioral problems care (Kelty & Wakabayashi, 2020). Predominantly, parent engagement has been defined as the involvement of parents in their child’s education at home and at school through activities that support and complement the child’s learning, development, and healthy growth and development (Posey-Maddox & Haley-Lock 2020). There is a growing body of research that documents the importance of parent engagement in student success. Jensen & Minke (2017), postulate that parent engagement is an underused resource that could highly benefit student success rates in academics and social/emotional growth. Research has shown that parent engagement is associated with higher grades and test scores, improved school attendance, increased motivation, and better social skills. In addition, parent engagement has been found to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. In this context, one significant question that remains relevant is what are the key problems that school nurses face when trying to engage parents, the associated and, and what are the potential solutions to these problems.

The first key problem involves communicating with parents. Language barriers, cultural differences, and lack of transportation can all impede communication between school nurses and parents. Additionally, some parents may not be comfortable discussing sensitive topics such as reproductive health or substance abuse with school staff. Another problem relates to the lack of understanding of what school nurses do. Some parents may view school nurses as solely responsible for dispensing medication and providing first-aid, while others may not be aware of the wide range of services that school nurses provide. A final problem identified in the literature is that some parents may not have the time or resources to get involved in their child’s education. They may work long hours, have multiple jobs, or be single parents. Some parents may also feel that they do not have the skills or knowledge to help their children with schoolwork (Jensen & Minke, 2017).

Despite these challenges, there are a number of ways that school nurses can engage parents in the services they provide. According to Gerzel-Short (2018) one solution to the lack of parental or family engagement in the services/program for the school, nurses is to have the school offer family support groups. These groups would serve as a place for parents to openly share any issues or concerns they may have and also to communicate with other parents that may be going through a similar situation. This would create a sense of community and support for the parents, which in turn, would lead to more involvement in their child’s education.

Another solution is for the school to offer more training opportunities for parents on topics such as positive parenting techniques, effective communication, and conflict resolution (Sanders, et al., 2019). These workshops would provide parents with the necessary skills to be more engaged in their child’s education and also help to build trusting relationships between parents and school staff. A final solution that was identified is for school nurses to make a greater effort to reach out to parents who may be reluctant or unable to come to the school (Posey-Maddox & Haley-Lock, 2020). This could be done through home visits, phone calls, or even text messages. By making this extra effort, school nurses can show parents that they are invested in their child’s success and that they are willing to work with them to ensure that their child receives the best possible care (Kelty & Wakabayashi, 2020).

Conclusion

With all the above being said, it is evident that there are a number of ways to help school nurses engage parents in their child’s education. However, one solution that could potentially have the biggest impact is for the school to offer more training opportunities for parents on topics such as positive parenting techniques, effective communication, and conflict resolution. These workshops would provide parents with the necessary skills to be more engaged in their child’s education and also help to build trusting relationships between parents and school staff. By offering these types of workshops, schools can show parents that they are invested in their child’s success and that they are willing to work with them to ensure that their child receives the best possible care.
