Osteoarthritis is a widespread form of arthritis that occurs when the shielding cartilage that cushions the bone ends erodes eventually.  When the cartilage is damaged, the tissues within the joint become excessively proactive to repair the damage. The process of repair may cause alterations in the joint structure, but enable the joint to work as usual without stiffness or pain (Abramoff & Caldera, 2020). Although this disorder can harm any joint, it commonly affects joints in the knees, spine, hands, and hips. This condition is highly prevalent and affects millions of people globally.

Patients with osteoarthritis usually present with various symptoms that are chronic, menacing, and slowly worsening. The clinical characteristics of the disorder include joint pain and stiffness that aggravate the pain and are relieved by rest.  Pain often worsens the entire day while stiffness tends to improve. Lingering osteoarthritis leads to deformity and a minimized range of movement.  When the examination is conducted to detect deformity, some common characteristic findings can be noticed depending on the affected joint. For instance, Bouchard nodes and Heberden nodes can be noticed in the hands and varus malalignment or fixed flexion deformity in the knees (Abramoff & Caldera, 2020).

Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed by taking the medical history of the patient, family history, and day-to-day living. A physical examination can also be conducted to identify physical signs such as tenderness, swelling, and bone spurs. However, there is no existing standard laboratory test to validate osteoarthritis. Laboratory tests can only be conducted to exclude other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.  According to Hayashi et al., (2018), the imaging tests include x-rays to highlight the remaining space between joint bones, depict bone spurs, and determine loss of cartilage. MRI is used to provide comprehensive observation of the soft tissues such as ligaments, muscles, cartilage, bone, and tendons. Ultrasound can be used to examine the structures of soft tissue that surround the affected joint.
