In recent years, there has been an increase in the amount of screen time that children are exposed to. This increased screen time has mixed effects to the children, as it can be both beneficial or detrimental. This has led to many parents wondering whether they should limit their children’s screen time or not. There are a number of arguments for and against limiting children’s screen time. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and explain why I believe that parents should limit their children’s screen time.

It can negatively affect children’s health. Spending too much time in front of screens can have negative effects on children’s health, which is why some people argue that it should be limited. Children who spend too much time in front of screens can suffer from a number of health problems, including obesity, poor sleep, and eye strain. Children who spend more than two hours per day in front of a screen are more likely to be overweight or obese than those who spend less time in front of a screen. This is because extended periods of sitting can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer (Tang et al., 7). In addition to the physical health risks associated with too much screen time, there are also mental health risks. For example, children who spend more than seven hours per day in front of a screen are more likely to have attention problems. This is because screens can overstimulate the brain and make it difficult to focus. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that too much screen time can lead to symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Tong et al. 3).

One more reason to limit kids’ screen time is the negative impact it can have on their development and education. The first argument against limiting children’s screen time is that it can be educational. There are a number of educational apps and websites that children can use to learn new things. Additionally, many children’s television shows are educational and can teach children about a variety of topics. The educational advantage was highly evident during the Covid-19 pandemic, as kids would learn so much via the television (Dong et al., 8). While it is true that some screen time can be educational, it is important to remember that there are other ways for children to learn. They can read books, go outside, and interact with other people. There is no need for children to spend all of their time in front of a screen in order to learn.

The second argument against limiting children’s screen time is that it can be entertaining. Children can watch their favorite shows, play games, and be creative on their devices. This can help them to relax and have fun (Newmann, 5). While it is true that screen time can be entertaining, it is important to remember that there are other ways for children to have fun. They can play with toys, go outside, and interact with other people. They do not need to be in front of a screen all the time in order to have fun.

When taking into account all of these factors, it becomes clear that parental restrictions on their children’s screen time are warranted. While some screen time can be educational and entertaining, too much of it can be harmful to children’s health and interfere with other activities. These issues include causing health problems to children and hindering children development. Therefore, it is important for parents to find a balance that works for their family.
