The Impact of TV on Children’s Literacy Development Essay

The Impact of TV on Children’s Literacy Development Essay

Summary

In the chapter “TV and Audio: Hurting or Helping Literacy?”, Jim Trelease discusses the pros and cons of television and its impact on literacy. He opens with the story of Sonya Carson, a single mother who raised two sons in inner-city Detroit. Despite having a third-grade education, Mrs. Carson was determined to help her sons succeed in school. She limited their television viewing and required them to read two books each week. As a result, both sons went on to graduate from college and have successful careers (Trelease 2013).

Trelease (2013) goes on to say that while television can be harmless in moderation, it is the experiences that children are not having while they watch TV that can be harmful. He argues that too much television can lead to underachievement in school. Trelease (2013) argues that TV can be harmful to children if it is not used in moderation. He cites research that shows a connection between “over-viewing” and underachievement. He recommends that parents limit their children’s TV time and make sure they are doing other activities, such as reading.

While acknowledging that TV can be helpful in some ways, Trelease (2013) ultimately argues that it is more harmful than helpful to children’s development. He urges parents to limit their children’s TV time and to make sure that they are engaged in activities that will help them develop strong literacy skills. He recommends limiting TV time and filling the free time with activities that will help children succeed in school.

Reflection

After reading this chapter, I was struck by the negative impact that television can have on children’s literacy development. I was particularly struck by the story of Sonya Carson and her two sons. I think this story highlights the importance of parents being intentional about the time their children spend in front of the TV. The chapter provides some valuable information on managing children’s screen time in this era where there is so much screen exposure for the young generation (Oswald et al. 2020).

I believe that this story also highlights the importance of parents being intentional about the types of activities their children are engaged in. Carson made a deliberate choice to have her sons read two books a week. This decision had a positive impact on their literacy development. I think this story highlights the importance of parents making sure that their children are engaged in activities that will help them develop strong literacy skills. Using this in my classroom will undoubtedly assist students in developing strong literacy skills, which will result in improved academic performance.

I agree with Trelease (2013) that parents should be mindful of the amount of time their children spend watching TV. In my own classroom, I would make sure to provide opportunities for students to engage in activities that promote literacy skills, such as reading aloud and discussing books. I would also make sure to provide opportunities for students to interact with one another in positive ways, such as through cooperative learning activities. By providing these opportunities, I hope to help my students develop strong literacy skills and positive social-emotional skills.
