DQ 2: Leadership Theories

The general health practice requires leaders and staff to work together for a common objective. Team motivation is also critical to high performance and job satisfaction. As a result, nurse leaders should assess the staff’s needs in-depth and exercise leadership in a way that would produce the best results. Leadership theories illustrate the various leadership styles that leaders can apply in different situations and, primarily, depending on the characteristics of their followers.

Transformational leadership is among the dominant nursing theories. Its central tenet is that effective leadership involves developing a vision and inspiring followers to achieve it (Seljemo et al., 2020). Instead of assigning tasks and controlling people, transformational leaders motivate them and encourage them to think creatively. Concerning strengths, transformational leaders excel in conflict resolution and work with motivated teams. They are also able to mobilize teams to work together and ensure that roles are completed quickly and as expected (Chu et al., 2021). Weaknesses include increased dependence on continuous communication and feedback and the need for followers to agree with their leaders. Influence can also backfire depending on the leader-followers relationship.

The other leadership theory is situational or contingency theory. Its guiding principle is that leaders’ actions and interventions in problem-solving should vary as circumstances change (Contandriopoulos et al., 2018; Whitney, 2018). In this case, the leadership approach should depend on the situation the leader is leading. Contingencies include changes in organization size, the nature of the technology being utilized, and the practice environment dynamics. The contingency theory has several strengths, including promoting creativity and a realistic view of leadership and management. Notable weaknesses include situations being influenced by many factors that can be difficult to analyze and the need for leaders to know all the alternatives before taking any action.

DQ 3: Mandated Reporting

Cases of abuse are widespread in society, and appropriate interventions are necessary to protect the victims from permanent injuries, mental damage, or death, among other adverse outcomes. States have different provisions for mandated reporting. In any case, it is crucial to report a confirmed or suspected case to ensure that those abused get timely and appropriate support (Thomas & Reevs, 2021). All New Jersey’s residents are mandated reporters.
