“An exploration of women’s experience of taking part in a randomized controlled trial of a diagnostic test during pregnancy: A qualitative study.” -http://dx.doi.org.lopes.idm.oclc.org/10.1111/hex.12969
The article I chose is “An exploration of women’s experience of taking part in a randomized controlled trial of a diagnostic test during pregnancy: A qualitative study”. The objective of this article is to find out pregnant women’s views of participating in clinical research trials while being pregnant. This was a randomized controlled trial for a diagnostic test for preeclampsia, placental growth factor. Interviews were done with 19 women who just went through the trial at a recruiting site. The women selected were women who recently gone through and consented to the PARROT Ireland trial during their most recent pregnancy. The study was 6-15 months, and consisted of all Caucasian women ages 24-42 years, and 52% were nulliparous before their most recent pregnancy (Hayes-Ryan et al., 2020).
The strategy that was used was a thematic analysis. The interviews were transcribed and separated into different categories. They were then reviewed, and the similarities were pooled into themes. There were 4 major themes: understanding preeclampsia, motivators for participation, barriers to making decisions, and their influence of the PARROT experience in Ireland. The women were interested in participating in the study during their pregnancy. Pregnant women may be at risk. The information gathered helped pregnant women’s understanding of trial (Hayes-Ryan et al., 2020).
Over the past several years there have been many concerns with having pregnant women participate in clinical trials. Clinical trials are done in order to help guide scientific based practice for all groups. With this trial, pregnant women that were showing signs and/or symptoms of pre-term preeclampsia were selected. Some of these women were diagnosed with preeclampsia. They then explained how it impacted their pregnancy and how they felt like they had little to no control over their health care. The women were familiar with clinical trials and knew the importance of research being done in order to help improve the future of their care. The women felt like it benefited their pregnancy and had reliable resources. None of the women had negative experiences during the trial (Hayes-Ryan et al., 2020).

Question 1: What is your understanding of the condition?

Over the recent past, there has been an increasing demand for safe and reliable clinical research done on pregnant women for the benefit of the future. It is of overwhelming concern due to the use of medication in pregnant women with other chronic conditions. Going into participating in clinical trials, these pregnant women have no prior understanding of preeclampsia. Some of them, being primigravidas, had only heard about it from social media and didn’t think preeclampsia was of concern to them because they were young mothers. Most of them were not aware of the risk factors, symptoms, and consequences of preeclampsia. The multigravida patients had some knowledge of the risk factors, symptoms, and effects on pregnancy (Hayes‐Ryan et al., 2019). However, they felt they needed the necessary knowledge before signing up for the trials. This is particularly important so that subjects know the level of risk to sign informed consent.

Question 2: What are your motivating factors as a pregnant patient participating in a clinical trial?

Most women reported the ability to help others as their primary motivator. They felt that their contribution was paving the way for future clinical trials. They also said the lack of burden associated with the trial and the potential of getting care directly from the exercise sooner than others was their motivation (Hayes‐Ryan et al., 2019).  This was significant because it helped filter out women who were solely participating because of the wrong purposes than intended.

Question 3: What would you consider as your barriers to deciding to participate in a clinical trial?

The main barrier to decision making, as reported by women, was the risk (Van der Zande et al., 2018). They expressed concerns about putting the innocent fetus as guinea pigs for a potentially harmful trial, and therefore careful considerations had to be done. Misconceptions about the exercise and language barrier also contributed to their reluctance. This is important to allay fears that the mothers have and improve their experience.
