After familiarizing yourself with content of the different views in the “Allied Health Community” media, select “Patient Process,” by selecting “Scenarios” and selecting “Patient Process,” located under the “Views” drop down window (Make sure that “Patient Process” is on the “ON” mode). This component of the media illustrates those allied health professions that have direct interactions with the patient. Based on this media component, discuss the following:
1. Why it is important for the practitioner of the health care profession to have a basic understanding of the collaborative team’s scope of practice and role in order to deliver cost-effective quality care?
2. What communication skills would the practitioner need to learn in order to effectively communicate research with the collaborative team in order to achieve the desired outcomes?

Health care practitioners must clearly understand the collaborative team’s scope and role. This ensures delivery of cost-friendly, quality and effective health care services. Team collaboration, also referred to as interprofessional collaboration, is defined as an act in which several health care workers from different cadres and professional backgrounds work together with patients or communities to render the highest quality of care (Sullivan et al, 2015). Herein, I discuss allied healthcare, its importance in the delivery of cost-effective quality care, as well as the communication skills required by collaborative health care practitioners.

This basic understanding by the health care practitioners is important as it enables the health providers to consider each other’s perspective based on the area of specialty and patient’s preferences to ensure better service delivery. More so, it helps build effective teamwork that can positively affect patient safety and prognosis. This is achieved by practicing patient centered team work approach, in which a culture of principles and values is shared. Understanding team collaboration by the health providers gives them a role of ensuring patient satisfaction regardless of the shortages experienced in the health sector. According to Mitchell (2014) healthcare collaboration also helps improve health outcomes of the entire population while reducing costs. It, therefore, requires commitment and cooperation from each health care worker to achieve the set goals in patient management.

Further, collaborative care requires that all the health care providers work in a conducive environment with utmost respect for each other. They also focus on partnership and sharing of knowledge. Communication is key, as poor communication is often cited as the root cause of medical errors. It is an important skill applied by the collaborative teams to achieve the desired outcome. When transferring information from one point to another, either vocally, written, visually or using nonverbal cues, some skills are needed to ensure accurate and clear information is communicated. Foremost, communication should consider diversity in any organization. Therefore, when communicating with people of different race, culture and gender it is key to understand the differences in issues such as cultural backgrounds. Health care providers also need to maintain an open mind during the communication, making it accommodative to any gender, race or culture. Other essential components of effective communication include observing nonverbal cues, being moderate and decent and maintaining a personal touch during communication.

Conflicts often arise and are inevitable in any workplace. Communication is an important aspect in the resolution. Therefore, as a health care practitioner, I must develop good listening skills and recognize that differing opinions can lead to innovative solutions (Sullivan et al, 2015). Secondly, I should embrace open communication in which issues are addressed immediately and openly. Each issue should be addressed at a time. Organizations should develop critical communication skills to ensure team cohesion, builds trust, and motivation. Active listening and questioning are essential as they help in sharing of ideas. There should be a well-structured communication flow that will aid in supervision and problem resolution. Team members should study and understand nonverbal communication for example body language. Self-awareness is also important as it help team members appreciate their differences.

In conclusion when these communication styles are adapted, the desired outcome will effectively be achieved by each collaborative team member. On understanding of the key communication skills and the importance of collaborative care delivery, quality care to patient assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation of nursing or medical process is achieved. This will eventually strengthen and empower the Allied health community.
