Health Model Sample
- Discuss how you would integrate either the Health Belief Model or Health Promotion Model in meeting the health care needs of a family.
The Health Belief Model (HBM) focuses on variables that can predict individual behavior and actions regarding specific health outcomes. A family may include people with different health needs, priorities, and preferences. As a result, it is essential to improve family members’ self-efficacy and understanding of various predictors of healthy behaviors. According to Zewdie et al. (2022), the HBM specifies that people’s behavior and actions toward health outcomes depend on six variables: perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barrier, self-efficacy, and perceived threat. Perceived susceptibility and severity entail individual vulnerability to negative health outcomes and the adverse consequences associated with the outcome. For example, the perception of the seriousness of having COVID-19 infection may prompt changes in individual behaviors and actions (Shitu et al., 2022). Perceived benefits are positive outcomes of healthy behaviors and actions. Finally, self-efficacy is the individual confidence to implement recommended measures of health and well-being, including preventive measures such as smoking cessation, vaccination, and healthy lifestyle guidelines.
As a healthcare professional, I would integrate the Health Belief Model (HBM) in meeting the healthcare needs of a family by educating family members about the perceived susceptibility and severity of negative health outcomes, benefits, and barriers that may restrict them from engaging in healthy behaviors and activities, and the essence of self-efficacy in promoting health and wellness. According to Azadi et al. (2021), educational interventions based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) can effectively increase people’s perceived susceptibility and severity, understanding of the perceived barriers, benefits, self-efficacy, cues to action, and practice scores. Educational programs should focus on preventive interventions, health literacy, self-care, and the recommended guidelines for healthy behaviors and actions.
