Topic 3 DQ 1: Primary Research Articles Sample

Routinely, nurses encounter patient care and workplace problems hampering health outcomes. As a professional obligation, nurses seek practical and sustainable solutions for such problems and implement them through evidence-based practice (EBP) projects. A key component of EBP is scientific evidence which nurses, as change agents, combine with clinical expertise and patient preferences to improve health outcomes (Li et al., 2019). To support EBP interventions and achieve positive outcomes, scientific evidence should be sourced from credible sources. It should meet the threshold of CRAAP (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose). Sources that meet this criterion are primary research articles of level I, II, or III evidence.

Various primary research articles support my proposed DPI project (implementing a preventive bundle to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers among elderly and debilitated patients. Zhang et al. (2021) assessed the effectiveness of a pressure care bundle in reducing pressure injury incidence in intensive care units. The research was a quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention design. In a different study, Yap et al. (2021) evaluated the effectiveness of repositioning intervals in reducing pressure ulcers in adult nursing home residents. The research was a cluster randomized trial. The two articles are primary research articles since the authors conducted the research. In primary research, researchers gather new data or commission the necessary data to be collected on their behalf. Then, they analyze, interpret, and disseminate the data. Regarding evidence levels, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies are high-level evidence research. As prospective studies of methods and treatments, RCTs assign participants to the experimental and control groups and the differences in the outcome variable studied (Hariton & Locascio, 2018). Quasi-experimental studies evaluate interventions but not through randomization.

The two articles support the proposed intervention since they quantitatively confirm the effectiveness of a preventive pressure bundle or its components in reducing pressure ulcers in health care settings. Zhang et al. (2021) found that a preventive care bundle reduced pressure injury rates from 13.86% to 10.41% in intensive care units. In the other study, Yap et al. (2021) found that pressure injury incidence during the intervention (repositioning) was 0.0% compared to 5.4% in Baseline. As a result, implementing similar interventions will have positive effects in the DPI project.

DNP-820 Topic 3 DQ 1
Assessment Description
Using “Levels of Evidence in Research,” located in the Class Resources, identify two primary research articles that support the proposed intervention for your DPI Project. Explain why these research articles are considered primary research articles with a high level of evidence and how the support your proposed intervention.

DNP-820 Topic 3 DQ 2

Assessment Description
Compare practice-based evidence, research, and evidence-based practice and discuss how all three complement and support one another. Use examples and relevant literature to support your response.
