Ethical considerations are crucial in implementing any change project, particularly in healthcare. Nurses shortage is a persistent challenge in the healthcare sector with significant implications on patient care and outcomes; therefore, implementing change projects to address this problem is vital. This should be done considering the ethical implications of such projects to ensure that they align with the values and principles of the nursing profession. This paper will identify three ethical considerations and discuss how they can impact the implementation of the change project on the nurses’ shortage.

The ethical principle of justice requires that resources, benefits, and burdens are distributed fairly and equitably. This principle requires that nurses are compensated fairly for their work and that their workload is reasonable (Varkey, 2021). The shortage of nurses and caregivers can result in a situation where the available staff is overworked and underpaid, violating the principle of justice.

Autonomy is the second ethical principle that impacts the implementation of the project. It requires that individuals have the right to make their own decisions and act on their values and beliefs. Autonomy requires that nurses be free to make decisions about their work and the care they provide to the residents (Oshodi et al., 2019). The staff shortage can limit their autonomy as they may need more time or resources to provide the quality of care they want. Therefore, any implemented changes should ensure that the staff has the autonomy to provide quality care to the residents.

The third ethical principle is beneficence, which requires that actions promote the well-being of individuals and society. This principle requires that the care provided to the residents is of high quality and promotes their well-being (Pandit, 2021). However, the shortage of nurses can result in a situation where the quality of care provided is compromised, which can violate the principle of beneficence. Addressing these ethical considerations in implementing this change project is important to ensure positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
