Reliability and Validity in Research Design Essay

Reliability and Validity in Research Design Essay

Validity and reliability are concepts utilized in evaluating the quality of a given research project. They both demonstrate how well a certain technique, test, or method measures something (‌Sileyew, 2019). Validity mainly focuses on the accuracy of the measure, whereas reliability focuses on the consistency of the measure. This paper provides an analysis of the methods and results of the selected translational research for its validity and reliability.

The study by Cuttler et al. (2017) is an example of a transitional research article that can be utilized to distinguish between the validity and reliability of the project. Looking at the methodology section, it can be said that the project is valid with reliable results. The study utilized performance improvement research with historic control to ensure the validity of the data collected. Additionally, the study was conducted in only 4 medical-surgical units, which all participantswere shown a short video (4 minutes) to remind them of fall prevention strategies. Trained volunteers were also used to prove the validity of the methods utilized. Given that this is a performance improvement study, means that it can be conducted again after a given period, under the same condition to further reduce falls and injuries in the medical-surgical inpatient unit.

With the adoption of valid and reliable methods, Cuttler et al. (2017)are more likely to attain accurate and consistent results. For instance, the study only focused on 3 outcome measures, such as the changes in the number of fall incidences, fall with any injury, and fall with a serious injury. The data was collected every day by giving a narrative description of the patient experience for validity purposes. Consequently, the results were displayed in percentage per 1000 patients, concerning incidences of fall, which reduced by 20%. These results are reliable as they can be used in the future to identify areas of weakness and further promote interventions aimed at reducing fall incidences.
