Leadership Practicum Journal: Power
Practicum Activities Reflection:
During the past two weeks, I happened to have learned the application of different leadership skills indifferent situations from observing my preceptor. We mainly focused on clinical encounters which require the implementation of appropriate leadership skills such as critical thinking and decision making in conflict resolution (James et al., 2021). My preceptor reiterated the significance of emotional intelligence in achieving effective leadership in the healthcare organization. During the first week of my practicum experience, my preceptor requested that I come up with a presentation on appropriate leadership skills and competencies and how to apply them in clinical practice. We came across several incidences which required key leadership factors like integrity, power, and emotional intelligence among others. I was able to learn how to balance between professional responsibility and power, with respect to emotional intelligence from my preceptor who utilized the servant leadership style to ensure normal functioning and successful operation of the hospital.
Application of Leadership:
Observing my preceptor’s work has been very insightful on core personality traits associated with good and effective leadership in healthcare organizations. My preceptor would engage all the nursing staff within the unit, and work together with them in assigning shifts and duties, in addition to setting weekly goals. She always reminded me that leaders should serve their followers, and not the other way around. As such, she displayed a great balance between her professional responsibility as a nurse leader and the power to delegate duties and implement change. She also displayed a high level of emotional maturity and intelligence, by never displaying any form of moodiness, irrespective of the situation and the magnitude of the issue at hand. Rather, she would be optimistic. My entire experience was on the core skills and competencies such as self-confidence, personal integrity, emotional intelligence, and internal locus of control, displayed by my preceptor as a successful servant leader (Eva et al., 2019).
Practicum Project Preparation:
For my practicum experience, I would like to focus on the acquisition of appropriate skills and competencies needed to exhibit the transformational power of servant leadership in the nursing field. For starters, through this project, I have been able to have the desire to serve other nurses as a leader later in my career. However, for this to be possible, I intend to gain certain skills and competencies through this practicum. For instance, I need to be able to learn how to instill a sense of collective ownership of the success of the healthcare organism by the end of this practicum experience. Additionally, I need to be able to learn how to balance between leadership power and professional responsibility in serving others. Just like my preceptor, I need to lead by moral authority rather than relying on positional authority alone to be able to inspire followership (James et al., 2021). I look forward to being a nurse educator at some point in my career which will require these servant leadership skills and competencies to promote workflow and success of the healthcare organization.
Leadership Video Reflection:
The video on “Servant Leadership – Issue of Power” illustrated the challenges and opportunities associated with power in leadership. The speaker in this video emphasizes the existence of power in the capability to lead. For instance, the speaker mentions that a leader should be very thoughtful of their actions as their followers will mostly see them as role models and copy what they do. The speaker further talks about leaders being the focus of attention, forcing those who are under them to take similar actions like in conflict resolution. As such, leaders need to share their power by considering the needs of others first and helping them improve their performance as much as possible (Divya & Suganthi, 2018). Additionally, the video points out the need for leaders to utilize their power in promoting collaborative leadership rather than commanding their followers. With the acquisition of appropriate leadership skills and competencies, it is easier to earn respect and power to influence others positively by serving them, rather than commanding them. I believe that with great power comes great responsibility, as most people will be looking up to you when it comes to making crucial decisions such as implementation of evidence based practice. Finally, it is necessary to promote engagement and good communication among team members for the development of appropriate goals and objectives directed towards achievement of the healthcare organization’s mission.
