Impact Of The Aging Population On Both Increased Health Care Expenditures And Wasted Resources

Aging on Health Care Expenditure and Wasted Resources

The aging population will alter the health care system forever due to increased disease burden and cost expenditures that it places on providers, resources, and facilities. The aging population implies need for more health care resources to combat conditions like chronic illnesses associated with older age (Cristea et al., 2020). Individuals in old age are vulnerable to different conditions due to their weakened immunity, meaning that more resources; including human resources are required to maintain this population to attain quality living. Statistics by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) show that an aging population will increase the cost of health spending to constitute close to 19.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2027 and reach $6 trillion (Inserro, 2019). Public health system will spend more on Medicare and Medicaid to ensure quality of life and access to healthcare for the aging population that is projected to increase to higher levels than now.

Genetics play a role in longevity of life and one’s ability to live longer. Increased access to healthcare implies that individuals are living longer and passing on these genes and genetic components to their children. Genetics implies that older adults have better immunity and can fight pathogens and other environmental issues that increase susceptibility to infections and other healthcare conditions.

Doctoral-prepared nurses should apply learned information in practice to enhance quality care and accessibility for different patient populations. The nurse can apply this knowledge by developing innovative models to help aging adults access health services at a cost-effective level and with increased convenience (Cristea et al., 2020). The nurse needs to understand the different aspects of care that impact the aging population and develop appropriate interventions to offer quality care in their practice.

Methods Using Evidence-Based Data To Support New Or Innovative Ways On Aging Population

Gandarillas and Goswami (2018) observed that present trends in health care delivery and management show new and better possibilities to enhance health care, especially among the aging population. The authors identify predictive and personalized health care that integrates information and communication technologies, home-based care, prevention health and promotion as effective ways to enhance health care for the aging population. The U.S. Human and Health Service’s administration for Community Living proposes a host of methods that leverage evidence-based data to support novel and innovative ways in caring for the aging population. One of these programs is the Enhance Fitness program as a multi-component, group physical activity model whose aim is to assist older adults at different levels of fitness to be more active, energized, and empowered to maintain and sustain independent living and prevent functional decline (ACL, 2021). The program entails one-hour sessions held two or three times each week in a host of settings like community centers, senior housing centers, and retirement communities. The sessions include workouts conducted by certified, trained and experienced instructors with different activities to enhance the fitness and activeness of the targeted population.

The anticipated outcomes of this approach are to help the aging individuals be energized, live an active life, and reduce a decline in their functional abilities (Sisko et al., 2019). The method employs EBP data to improve the overall health condition of older persons who require increased interactions and physical activity as part of health promotion for quality living.

Doctoral-prepared nurse can use this information in practice setting to leverage EBP data in developing interventions that can improve the quality of life of aging individuals. The nurse can apply the information by starting a similar program in the facility to improve the quality of life for the aging individuals under their care.

What is the impact of the aging population on both increased health care expenditures and wasted resources? Do genetics play a role? How can the doctoral-prepared nurse apply this information in practice? Explain. Support your rationale with a minimum of two scholarly sources.

In a separate paragraph, Identify a method that uses evidence-based data to support new or innovative ways to care for the aging population. What are the anticipated outcomes of employing this method and methods like it? How can the doctoral-prepared nurse apply this information in practice? Explain. Support your rationale with a minimum of two scholarly sources.
