Week 7 Discussion: Topic 1: Health Promotion

Topic 1: Health Promotion

One of the main health problems affecting the people of Fort Pierce Florida is overweight and obesity. According to the City-Data.com “Health and Nutrition in Florida,” 40% of people living in Fort Pierce are obese, while 2% have ever been diagnosed with obesity and 32% have tried losing weight (Lord & Roberson, 2020). As such, the Florida department of health has made it a priority to address this public health threat of overweight and obesity, which contribute to increased risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The purpose of this discussion is to illustrate the health promotion strategies at both primary and secondary levels in addressing overweight and obesity among community members in Fort Pierce Florida.

In response to the obesity epidemic, at the primary level, healthy weight initiatives can be implemented to promote healthy eating and active living reducing the risks associated with weight gain (Cardel et al., 2020). The community members can also utilize the ‘Healthy Weight Checklist’ to stay healthy. The community can also lobby for policies that discourage advertisements for unhealthy foods, especially for children.

At the secondary level, overweight/obesity awareness programs should be implemented to educate community members on the risks, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment strategies of the health problem. The community member should also be encouraged to frequently check their BMI, to promote appropriate weight management strategies (Lee et al., 2021). Lastly, for those who have already been diagnosed with the disease, to reduce the burden, they should be advised on the need of seeking treatment to avoid complications such as heart disease or diabetes.
