Scholarly Activities

Higher learning institutions across the nation are aiming at mitigating the challenges of fast-changing education systems and are reevaluating the role of faculty in the current complex learning environment. A crucial part of this role is the formulation of scholarship relevant to the nursing discipline. Scholarly activities are critical in nursing to realize the demands and realities of the clinical practice. Scholarly activity refers to peer-reviewed and openly disseminated creative work (Kallail et al., 2020). The scholarship entails various fundamental forms such as the discovery of new knowledge, formulation of new methods, technologies and uses, and incorporation of knowledge resulting in new understanding.

Nursing is a trusted professional and is crucial in all healthcare settings. Nursing students have broad opportunities to engage in scholarly activities. Dedication to scholarly approaches to practice, research, and education leads to common bonds in academic nursing. Scholarly activities are crucial in enhancing the competency and competitiveness of students in particular spheres of knowledge and enable them to acknowledge certain nursing issues that need to be addressed in the healthcare system (Kallail et al., 2020). This paper seeks to provide a scholarly activity that I engaged to support my capstone project on addressing childhood obesity through health education on lifestyle changes. In particular, the scholarly activity that I participated is joining a quality improvement team.

Overview

Scholarly activities are crucial in enhancing the competency and competitiveness of students in particular spheres of knowledge and enable them to acknowledge certain nursing issues that need to be addressed in the healthcare system (Kallail et al., 2020). The scholarly activity I engaged in was participation in a quality improvement team. This team encompassed representatives of interprofessional teams drawn from various departments within the hospital. The major responsibility of the team was to come up with ways to enhance the quality of various clinical processes including mitigating the ever-increasing issue of childhood obesity.

Problem

The organization was alarmed by increasing incidences of childhood/adolescent obesity. Childhood obesity is currently a serious health concern in the United States and globally (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Childhood obesity is associated with adverse and far-reaching effects such as ill-health and a decline in life expectancy rates among this population. Children and adolescents with obesity are likely to suffer from various conditions including breathing issues such as asthma and sleep apnea and high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which are risk factors for heart diseases. The condition is also linked to obesity in adulthood, hypertension, and cancer. Obesity is also attributed to a high risk of insulin resistance, diabetes, and risk of psychological and social problems such as poor self-esteem and discrimination (Sanyaolu et al., 2019). Other than the health issues, childhood obesity is also linked to serious economic impacts involving heavy expenditure on the condition. Therefore, it needs to be addressed to prevent the escalation of its effects. Participation in this quality improvement team is crucial in identifying the best quality improvement processes to deal with the issue of childhood obesity.

Solution

The purpose of this capstone project is to address childhood obesity through a health education program on lifestyle changes. The scholarly activity fostered this proposed solution by focusing on the best ways to provide education to obese adolescents to enhance their awareness about healthy lifestyle choices and maintaining a healthy body weight. The quality improvement team is also expected to help in eradicating outdated methods from the education program provided to the obese adolescents, remove uncertainties from resources utilized during classes, and educate students to utilize effective educational strategies and technologies appropriately and rationally to enhance the impact of education on the target population (Baik & Zierler, 2019). Ultimately, the educational intervention on lifestyle changes is expected to the degree of compliance with healthy lifestyle changes among obese adolescents.

Opportunity

The objectives that will be realized in participating in the quality improvement team include awareness of new professional practices and the enhancement of innovative nursing methods. Nurses have a better understanding of the challenges they encounter in clinical practice (Baik & Zierler, 2019). Among the major challenges is the high prevalence of childhood/adolescent obesity. This scholarly activity will emphasize this existing knowledge as the opportunity to advance health education on lifestyle changes to reduce obesity rates in obese adolescents. Attending this scholarly activity is essential for my growth and development as a nurse through the creation of awareness of the equipment and methodologies to use when providing education to obese adolescents. The scholarly activity will also help in capacity building and the opportunity to participate in an interprofessional team, which was crucial in broadening my awareness of team communication, teaching opportunities, and patient care problems. Eventually, the scholarly activity will minimize the time needed for novice nurses to adapt and develop the experience to practice competently in a hospital after graduating.

Program Competencies Addressed

The program competencies addressed by participating in the quality improvement team include

  • Interprofessional collaboration
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Skills in nursing education
  • Quick adaptation of students to their working environment
  • Effective communication
  • Comprehension of pertinent quality improvement in the healthcare settings
  • Handling various quality issues encountered by the organization
  • A better understanding of the nursing environment
  • Organizational performance

Conclusion

Scholarly activities are essential components of nursing education development and entail numerous pursuits that expand the learning and also entail significant work that fosters the intellectual improvement of nursing students and practitioners. Participation in scholarly activities is essential in maintaining and improving the degree of proficiency. The scholarly activity for the current project was joining the quality improvement team. This activity was crucial in providing more insights into the quality improvement initiatives across various departments within healthcare and obtaining knowledge about emerging quality initiatives.
