Ethics are an essential aspect of healthcare as providers must have an ethical basis or foundation when facing complex situations where they need to make decisions concerning a plan of care. Principalism denotes the four principles in biomedical ethics. These include respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. The debate on the elevation of the principle of autonomy in ranking these principles remains controversial in the U.S. because of increased secularism and freedoms enjoyed due to the Constitution (Richie, 2020). The purpose of this discussion is to try and rank the importance of each of the four principles. The paper also provides how they would be ordered in the Christian biblical narrative.

Ranking the four Principles

Ranking of these principles can be complex and would require one to consider the facts and context of each case at its individual level. Respect for autonomy means that healthcare providers should respect the decisions that a patient makes when they have the capacities as independent-minded persons. Non-maleficence means not causing harm to others. Beneficence implores providers like physicians and nurses to prevent harm, offer benefits and attain a balance between the risks and costs and the expected patient outcomes (Shea, 2020). Finally, justice implores on the need to have fair distribution of resources and avoidance of any tendencies that may lead to discrimination. Under justice, there should be a balance among the benefits and even risks and costs. Based on these aspects, creating a balance among the four principles requires one to consider each case and the circumstances surrounding it to rank the principles.

Again, from a general perspective, while it is essential to consider and specify the particular context and details of a case or dilemma to concretely apply these principles and arrive at a strong action guiding results, people should understand how the application of these principles irrespective of the situation (Kalbian et al., 2020). For instance, beneficence and non-maleficence align with the obligations and duties of physicians based on their Hippocratic Oath. Autonomy is essential because human beings are born free and have the freedom to make decisions concerning their health and any way that they wish to live. Justice is essential and should be considered a fair distribution of benefits and resources is critical aspect of attaining access and quality outcomes.

Ranking the Importance Based on the Christian Biblical Narrative

The Christian biblical narrative has four parts that include creation, fall, redemption and restoration. Concepts like sin, righteousness and shalom offer a model through which the Christian worldview understand health and even diseases (Hoener, 2020). The creation narrative is explicit that God created the world and everything in it and all should give reverence to Him. The Fall of mankind according to the biblical narrative occurred when Adam disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit leading to the estrangement between man and God (Carlin, 2019). As a result, suffering, diseases, death and all evil became part of man’s existence. Redemption occurs through the sending of Jesus as the redeemer and savior of humankind upon confession of sins. Salvation accordingly, is the restoration of the right and proper relationship with God. Restoration is the end goal of redemption and salvation of mankind. The return of Jesus, the final judgment and restoration of the creation will inaugurate the final restoration. Therefore, based on the Christian biblical narrative, ranking the four principles requires one to understand each aspect of the narrative and its impact on human beings and care provision.

The ranking based on creation, fall, redemption, and restoration must consider God’s plan for human beings, that is to have free will to choose and enjoy the benefits of His creation. Imperatively, autonomy will come first followed by beneficence since human beings are created in God’s image and should have the freedom as well as benefits associated with their relationship with God (Kalbian et al., 2020). Non-maleficence comes third while justice is fourth since God is a God of justice and not focused on doing any harm, even with the sinful nature of man.
