NURS 6053: Developing Organizational Policies and Practices Assignment
The nursing shortage as a healthcare issue or stressor impacts the ability of health organizations to deliver quality and patient-centered care to enhance outcomes. The competing needs impacting the nursing shortage include patient need for quality care, workforce needs, and resources which may affect the development of requisite organizational policies to address the issue. These needs should align with the goals of offering better and cost-effective cars. The increasing demand for health and the focus on patient-centered care means that organizations will need more workforce to cater to the diverse populations (AACN, 2020). Further, workforce needs like more training, better working conditions that do not lead to burnouts, and welfare of the providers against the need for organization to reduce cost expenses influence nursing shortage.

An organizational practice or policy in my setting is the hiring of contractual nurses and employees who come to work for a limited duration in the facility to alleviate the problem of nursing shortage. The practice of hiring nurses on short-term contracts does not reflect well on the facility as it will mean possible low quality care since one understands that they are only there temporarily. The implication is that there is no continuity and enhanced level of accountability for the nurses and other employees in the organization. The policy’s strengths lie in its ability to offload the increased workload among nurses and help attain appropriate staffing levels and improve patient interactions and quality of care (Haddad et al., 2022). However, the policy does not promote ethics as it shows that one can only work for a certain duration and this makes them not committed to the organization. They may also show reduced levels of trust among the different stakeholders.
One policy or practice change that can balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients is the need to embrace and implement value-based care model and evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions. Value-based care model emphasizes quality as opposed to quantity. In this case, the facility should only admit patients based on its capacity to reduce the overall workload on nurses. EBP implementation will ensure that best practices like aspects of the value-based care are integrated in the overall care provision in the facility (Maleki et al., 2021). The current policy of short-term contractual employees does not demonstrate a commitment and the required level of trust. However, using these approaches will ensure that all ethical aspects in the issue are addressed.
