What experiences have you had with EBP or QI in your practice area?

Research and evidence-based practice are critical for quality improvement in the clinical environment. In my practice experience, I have been part of various quality improvement projects to improve efficiency and effectiveness to enhance quality and patient outcomes (Gray et al., 2017). One area that my organization has concentrated on is the implementation of prevention practices for Catheter-associated urinary infections. From these programs, I have learned the steps involved in evidence-based practice and quality improvement, starting with clinical inquiry and problem identification and building quality evidence to support quality improvement.

One of the factors that support EBP in my area of practice is leadership. Supportive and effective leadership encourages autonomy and creativity that motivate nurses and other health practitioners to explore solutions for problems encountered in the clinical environment. Additionally, supportive leadership cultivates a culture of change, which is an essential element for the success of EBP (Gray et al., 2017). Another factor that supports EBP is the positive attitude toward EBP and understanding of the usefulness of research in the clinical environment. The first barrier to EBP is time constrain. Most clinicians working on the EBP projects already have their hands full with the daily workflow activities (Mathieson et al., 2019). Hence, dedicating extra time to such projects becomes challenging. The second barrier I have noted is the limitation of resources, which is a perennial problem in most healthcare organizations.  

What do you think your role in research will be as an NP?

As an NP, I believe my role in research is to seek quality, up-to-date evidence and translate it into practice to promote practice improvement, resulting in quality excellence and optimal patient care experience (Greenhalgh, 2019). Additionally, I think my role in research will also involve the identification of practice gaps and knowledge gaps needed to support clinical improvements.
