Difference between Telehealth and Telemedicine Essay

The terms Telehealth and Telemedicine are often used interchangeably. Telehealth is a division of e-health. It generally refers to electronic and telecommunication technologies and services utilized to provide healthcare and services remotely (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). It entails using telecommunications and information technology (IT) to offer access to health assessment, diagnosis, consultation, interventions, supervision, and health information at a distance. Telehealth comprises healthcare services offered using audio and video technology.

On the other hand, Telemedicine refers to the practice of medicine supported by technology that facilitates the delivery of healthcare services remotely. A healthcare provider in one location utilizes a telecommunications infrastructure to provide care to a patient at a remote site. Telemedicine is a service that aims to enhance a patient’s health by allowing two-way, real-time participative communication between the patient and the health provider at a remote physical location (Kichloo et al., 2020). The service is fast evolving to offer increased access to high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective healthcare. Thus, Telemedicine has the potential to enhance access to quality significantly, affordable healthcare for patients while maintaining physical distancing for the safety of both patients and clinicians, especially during the COVID pandemic (Kichloo et al., 2020).

Telehealth varies from Telemedicine because it entails a broader scope of distant health care services than Telemedicine. Telemedicine is under the umbrella of telehealth and refers particularly to distant clinical services, while telehealth can include remote non-clinical services (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). However, Telehealth and Telemedicine comprise similar services, including remote patient monitoring, health education, patient consultation through wireless health applications, videoconferencing, and transmitting imaging and medical reports.
