Patient education significantly varies with the patient’s status. For instance, as patients age, their perception and interaction with healthcare providers changes. Older adults are more concerned about a healthy lifestyle to prolong life and therefore more likely to adhere to patient education. Likewise, older patients are more likely to understand their health problems increasing the likelihood of informed decision-making. Consequently, a collaborative approach to patient education is more likely with aging.

Negotiation has been associated with numerous advantages. For instance, it establishes therapeutic relationships and trust, is cheap, saves time, and is readily available and convenient. Similarly, negotiation enhances privacy, is flexible, and increases patient satisfaction and compliance with the treatment plan. However, drawbacks of negotiation include a lack of neutrality, requirement of negotiation skills, lack of legal protection, and parties that are not obligated to continue with negotiations.

Patient contracts are utilized chiefly for the management of chronic medical conditions. Lastly, the contract must outline the final provisions which include the signing of, additional agreements and dispute resolution procedure.

Baby boomers is an umbrella term that refers to all individuals born after the second world war, particularly between 1946 and 1964 (Walkner, 2020). Currently, most of these individuals are aged above 58 years and form the largest component of the US population. Similarly, a vast majority of this population is heading into retirement. The geriatric population is considered a special population in the healthcare industry due to an age-related decrease in body function, comorbidities, and additional health needs (Walkner, 2020).

6. List several generational, religious, and cultural differences between the 30-year-old health care professional and the elderly patient.

The elderly patient is most likely to deploy meditation and spiritual healing while the 30-year-old health professional will entirely depend on standard treatment. Likewise, elderly patients are more conservative, abide by cultural norms, and sustain family cohesiveness while the younger generation hangs on to modern technologies and appreciates cultural diversity. Finally, the elderly patient will value traditional practices, unlike the 30-year-old.

7. Explain some of the barriers to patient education of the elderly and discuss their special needs.

The majority of geriatric patients are conservative and not ready to acknowledge current trends which impairs patient education. Likewise, elderly patients find it challenging to effectively engage in communication due to an age-related decrease in attention and listening capability. Memory impairment hinders the recall of information. Finally, elderly patients have distinct needs including mobility issues, hearing difficulties, comorbidities, and polypharmacy (Emery-Tiburcio & Snyder, 2020).

8. List ways to best approach patient education of the elderly.

The healthcare provider should approach patient education of the elderly collaboratively. This includes the establishment of a trusty relationship and active listening. Additionally, the healthcare provider should strive to offer culturally competent patient education by becoming acquainted with the patient culture, integrating religious practices, and engaging family members (Emery-Tiburcio & Snyder, 2020).

Death is associated with numerous cultural and religious beliefs. For instance, Christians principally believe that death can be conquered and is the only pathway to attaining the Kingdom of God. Furthermore, some cultures mourn while others celebrate the loss of their loved ones. Finally, some cultures like African cultures view death as a rite of passage to ancestry who watch over the living.

10. Explain why it is important to discuss death and dying with the elderly patient and what the impact is on all involved.

It is essential to discuss death and dying with elderly patients to prepare them to accept and face the process and make incumbent arrangements with their families (Sutherland, 2019). The involvement of close relatives prepares them to tolerate and go through the process of grief carefully. Finally, discussing issues related to death enables the elderly to make informed decisions regarding how they want to live their final days or rather how they prefer their lives to be remembered and celebrated (Sutherland, 2019).

11. Explain how to teach a patient with a life-threatening illness.

Teaching an individual with a terminal illness is quite challenging. Following informed consent, the healthcare provider should emphasize reassuring the patient, sustaining hope, and providing moral support. The healthcare providers should focus on encouraging the patient to accept the current situation by offering appropriate evidence-based treatment practices. Finally, the healthcare provider should allow the patients with terminal illnesses to ask questions and reflect on their personal lives.
