Professionalism and Social Media

Many people use social media as an interactive way of sharing their stories, moments, events, and even their thoughts and opinions on certain social and even political as well as professional issues (Rukavina et al., 2021). However, nurses as health care professionals must ensure that they follow set guidelines by professional bodies like the American Nurses Association and even the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) (Balestra, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to offer an analysis of my personal social media accounts based on the required nursing standards and demonstrate if they are unprofessional and may be detrimental to my career and have a negative effect on the nursing profession’s reputation.

My social media accounts are on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Upon a review of the posts on all these platforms, I realized that many portray a positive impact of my personality and the nursing professional with the exception of two posts on Facebook. In these two posts, I complained about the kind of patients that I had handled while on night shift. I remarked that nurses are meant to collect those who do not understand who they are and in another I posted a picture of my bedside explaining why I should leave this “hell” profession. The second post had the image of a patient. As such, these posts were inappropriate based on expected conduct of nurses. Nurses should not criticize their patients, even when they do not show their identities. However, I showed the identity of a patient. It is not professional for a nurse to show discontentment and even disparage the profession. Such conduct amount to a mockery or ridicule of the profession.

Responsibility to Uphold Standards of Conduct

Nurses have a duty to uphold standards of conduct that align with their standards that govern the profession in their lives and at work to protect the overall reputation of nursing and their careers. For instance, nurses should understand ethical and legal responsibilities and policies in their organizations about their obligation to protect the privacy of their patients (Weiss et al., 2019). Personal conduct like the one I engaged in in my posts on social media can violate or breach the requirements of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) provisions like the privacy rule or the protected health information section (O’Connor et al., 2022). As stated, nurses should know that violation of these provision is both a legal and ethical issue which may lead to their prosecution and revocation of their practice license.

Social Media Reflection of Christian Values: Respect for Human Value and Dignity

At the core of Christian values is the respect for human beings and dignity. Nurses and other health care providers should demonstrate respect for human value and dignity on their social media when they do not describe patients in demeaning manner (Cherry & Jacob, 2018). The areas in my social media activity that shows Christian values associated with human value and dignity include those that I posted on spiritual healing, need for love to all people, and when I discussed the concept of holistic healing and health. Ensuring that a patient’s privacy is maintained is a core aspect of getting to know the different aspects of respect for human value and dignity.

Areas to Improve

Posting patient images and discussing the nursing profession in a disparaging ways are areas that I should improve. I should consider all patients, irrespective of their situations and background as human beings with inherent dignity and value who deserve respect. Sharing information on health and effective nursing interventions would improve my social media reputation and advance the nursing profession’s ideals.

Conclusion

The use of social media among healthcare providers and professionals leads to sharing of information on best interventions and practices to enhance the quality of care. Therefore, as a nurse, one must post information that protects patients, and does not sound detrimental to the profession and even career progression. As such, I must improve on areas that seem negative on the profession and patient’s personal information.
