Summary of Brochure
The brochure seeks to educate individuals about adult depression including warning signs, risk factors, and available treatment options. It guides readers on approaches they can take if they want to seek help for depression (TJC, 2020). With regards to therapy, the brochure clears the air on whether an individual can improve without treatment if one can get help from family members and friends, what one should know about therapy and medications, and interventions one can take to feel better.
Communication
The brochure contains information that seeks to facilitate communication between health providers and patients. It encourages individuals to feel safe and comfortable when discussing their thoughts and feelings with their therapist. Besides, it informs us that it is acceptable to request a referral if one perceives that the therapy is not effective (TJC, 2020). The brochure also promotes two-way communication between the therapist and patient by encouraging individuals to ask their therapists critical questions during therapy (TJC, 2020). The questions include asking how the therapy will help, the type of therapy the therapist recommends, if they have previously treated another person with similar symptoms, the treatment period, and their availability.
Personal Reflection
The topic of adult depression was of particular interest because there is a lot of misinformation about the condition. Most individuals are not aware of the symptoms and think that depression presents only as a sad mood. Besides, most individuals assume that depression is caused by stressful situations and abate when the stress triggers are addressed. Consequently, many people do not recognize when their family members, friends, and colleagues have depression until their condition worsens or they attempt suicide.
Evaluation of Brochure
The Speak Up brochure on adult depression is beneficial since it educates readers about depressive symptoms, risk factors, and treatments. I would incorporate it as a patient education resource for my patients since it would help them recognize depressive symptoms in themselves and the people around them. Besides, the brochure would help patients understand the initiatives they should take when they notice they have depressive symptoms so that they can be initiated early treatment. The brochure provided detailed information about depressive symptoms, risk factors, and details one should know about therapy, which is commendable. It also enlightens readers on the information they should obtain from their health providers about the therapy and medication. However, the brochure can be improved by informing readers of the specific talk therapies used in depression and how long each last.
The information in the brochure is presented clearly with no use of complex medical terminologies or jargon that would be difficult for non-medical people to understand. Besides, it gives adequate examples that help the reader to clearly understand the topic. Li et al. (2021) support the information in the brochure including the clinical manifestations, risk factors, and management of depression. For example, the article explains that there are various treatment interventions for depression, including psychotherapy and drug therapy. The brochure applies to the adult population since it talks about adult depression. Adults will benefit the most from knowing the symptoms, where to get help, and treatment options for depression.
The information can also be used by useful to children and adolescents since they also present with similar depression symptoms and they require therapy like adults. The information will improve patient safety since individuals are enlightened on what they should know about depression medications. Besides, the brochure encourages readers to ask about medication side effects, intake with pregnancy, and actions they should take when they experience side effects.
Evidence Review & Application
Li et al. (2021) explain that depression presents with persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, disturbed appetite and sleep, low energy, and even suicide, which disrupts daily activities and psychosocial functions. This is in line with the warning signs of depression presented in the brochure. The article also states that depression treatment includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Psychotherapy alleviates depressive symptoms and improves the quality of life.
Conclusion
The Speak Up brochure on depression contains educative information on symptoms, risk factors, and treatment therapies for depression. It also enlightens readers on steps to take if they have depressive symptoms and questions to ask their providers. Following the brochure’s information would be helpful since an individual would be able to recognize depressive symptoms, take the necessary actions to obtain treatment, and ensure their safety when prescribed treatment.
