Health disparity is a serious concern in the healthcare system that has attracted significant attention in the United States. Health disparity connotes health difference that is traced to environmental, social, and economic disadvantage. The population at risk of health disparity is Racial and ethnic minorities, particularly individuals with low incomes and language barriers. African Americans are the majority in this category and they are the most vulnerable to the issue of health disparity. This vulnerable population tends to encounter many barriers to health care including limited access to healthcare, lack of health insurance, poor availability of health care, and a higher proportion of certain conditions compared to the whites (Woods-Jaeger et al., 2021). There are also various stereotypes linked to this population that are likely to influence the expectations and beliefs of providers. As a result, this population often experiences poor health outcomes.

As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in leadership, my contribution to health promotion and disease prevention is to communicate the population’s needs to management, work to improve access to care, and ensure a safe healthcare environment. Nurse leaders are expected to advocate for and deliver equitable care to this population while ensuring a successful model of business that enables the healthcare facility to remain accessible to the public. The advocacy can be done through collaboration with preventive services, policymakers, and emergency medical services.
Issues of diversity and global perspectives of care can significantly contribute to my understanding of health equity as it relates to African Americans. The global concept of social justice is instrumental in championing access to all aspects of healthcare as a human right and a social resource (Nemetchek, 2019). Moreover, the focus on curative treatment significantly impacts the entire community’s health, which involves a collaborative approach to health where all stakeholders are involved to ensure an effective way to enhance the population’s quality of life, resilience, and entire health.
