With the increased challenge of health conditions especially chronic conditions, the idea of integrative health has become more appealing. Integrative health combines conventional treatment with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM stands for use of non-mainstream treatment approaches either in combination with western medicine or as a stand-alone treatment (NIH, 2021). Complementary medicine is a treatment approach used alongside conventional medication, for example, nutrition or diet including supplements, herbal products, and special diets. Other complementary examples are physical exercise, massage, apiculture, mindfulness, yoga, mindful eating, and art therapies among others (NIH, 2021). On the other hand, alternative medicines are used alone without western medicine, for example, pure herbal medication.

The mention of CAM often elicits a perception of herbal and traditional treatment approaches deemed unsafe and sometimes inferior to conventional treatment. However, the truth is that CAM refers to a wide range of treatment approaches including healthy diets, exercise, massages, physiotherapy, and other harmful activities to enhance health and well-being (Phutrakool & Pongpirul, 2022). Thus, a person who uses CAM the most is not your average poor and native individual as predominantly perceived. According to NIH, the person using CAM is also most likely using conventional treatment approaches and so they use CAM as a complimentary option.

A typical person who uses CAM is a middle-aged and highly educated female. Additionally, a person using CAM the most has a comfortable income. Mostly, people with more than two chronic conditions or a specific condition such as cancer tend to use CAM the most. Additionally, CAM use is also influenced by health status and demographic characteristics, for example, a person who rates their health as poor tends to use CAM more than those who believe their health is perfect (Fjær et al., 2020).

According to surveys, approximately 36% of American adults are using CAM in one form or the other (South & McDowell, 2018). However, when combined with prayer or prayer included as one of the CAM practices, the use of CAM among Africans shoots to 66%. Regarding race/ethnicity, the survey shows that African Americans use prayer as CAM more than other groups with a percentage of 79% (South & McDowell, 2018). Recognizing prayer as one of the CAM practices shifts the trends in the use of CAM because prayer is more closely associated with some groups than others. For example, people from low socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to be involved in prayer than individuals from the upper socioeconomic class. More likely ethnic minorities tend to use prayer, which happens automatically as part of their faith. For example, Christians believe that healing comes from God and so even as they seek standard treatment, they also pray for healing (Croft, 2018). Most people who use prayer as CAM will not disclose the information to their health providers.

People who use prayers pray for good health and also healing in the case of sickness. Individuals who use CAM also believe that combining it with complementary treatment supports health improvement. Other people use CAM when they believe that the conventional treatment would not help them with their health conditions. Similarly, 26% of individuals use CAM because of suggestions made by their health providers while 13% find conventional medications too expensive resorting to using CAM (Robles et al., 2018). Whether for financial, social, or belief in the power of CAM to enable healing, the reality is that more and more Americans use CAM. Hence, it is essential to provide the right information about CAM so that people can be more informed to make good health decisions.
