Nursing Theories

Nursing theories are fundamental frameworks and concepts that provide appropriate integrative guidelines for best nursing practices, research, and professional development. According to Watson’s Human Caring Theory, the core values in nursing practice are summarized in ten Caritas processes. These include embracing loving-kindness to oneself and others, inspiring faith and hope in life, facilitating own spiritual practices, fostering interpersonal trusting relationships, practicing genuine empathy and forgiveness to self and others, creatively applying all ways of knowing in nursing care, getting involved in creative teaching-learning processes, creating a caring-healing environment, respecting humanity, and embracing uncertainties and mysteries of life (Wei et al., 2019). This theory emphasizes holistic care by embracing spirituality, culture, and environmental contributions through meaningful trans-personal relationships.

Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations is grounded on the patient-nurse relationships in the provision of quality care. This patient-nurse relationship goes through four phases namely; orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution (Arabaci et al., 2019). The patient identifies a need and seeks help. The nurse through meaningful interactions with the patient gains more information about the patient’s problem. Through collaborative efforts, the plan of care is formulated to meet the patient’s needs. The patient-nurse relationship ends once the goals of the plan of care have been achieved. The patient plays a proactive role in their care.

These two theories emphasize the importance of trusting relationships and collaboration in nursing care. Watson’s Human Caring Theory, however, sees beyond treating the patient and puts into consideration other determinants of health such as spirituality, culture, and external environmental factors. It also engages in health promotion and preventive efforts rather than curative services. Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations embraces patient-centered care that encourages patient engagement. Watson’s Human Caring Theory will be more relevant in my future practice. This is because of the current multicultural patient population thus this theory will enhance culturally and religiously competent quality care that meets the needs of the diverse patient population.
