A nursing theory is a set of frameworks and principles that guide nursing practice. Nursing theories have evolved and emerged over time since they were put into practice and tested. They play a major role in nursing practice, education, and research, with nurse researchers and educators relying heavily on them. The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of nursing theory to patient care and nursing practice and identify a theory that reflects my view of the purpose of nursing.

The Purpose of Applying Nursing Theory to Patient Care

Nursing is considered a theory and practice-based profession. Nursing theories are applied in patient care to guide practice since they assist nurses in clarifying their values and beliefs about the processes of human health and understanding more about patient care approaches. Besides, nursing theory helps to improve the quality of nursing care since it enables nurses to convey what they do for patients and why they do it (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Thus, nurses apply nursing theories in assessing, intervening, and evaluating nursing care. Furthermore, nursing theory is crucial in creating a criterion to measure the quality of patient care.

Why Nursing Theory Is Meaningful To Current Practice

            Nursing theory is significant to current nursing practice since it guides nurses in differentiating and evaluating their essential role in various healthcare settings. Viewing nursing practice in a theoretical context enables nurses to build analytical and critical thinking skills and to clarify their professional values and assumptions. Besides, nursing theory is significant in practice because it helps nurses explain, describe, and predict their daily experiences (Younas & Quennell, 2019). It also gives nurses a rationale for obtaining reliable and valid data about patients’ health status and interpreting the data, which is crucial in effective decision-making and implementation of interventions.

How a Nursing Theory Can Be Applied Before Planning and Providing Care

Before planning and providing patient care, nursing theory can be used in assessing patients since it enables nurses to improve their observations. It also allows nurses to recognize human responses in their patients to which they direct their nursing interventions. Furthermore, a nursing theory can be used to create a patient assessment tool, which helps nurses elicit the data needed to assess and diagnose patients’ health status (Kitson, 2018). This enables the nurse to interpret the relationship among a patient’s diagnoses and gain insight into the patient’s situation. Besides, it guides the nurse in obtaining the data needed to plan nursing interventions and provide patient-centered care.

Theory That Best Reflects My Personal View of the Essence of Nursing

Orem’s Self-Care Model asserts that self-care is the contribution made by adults to their continued existence. Similar to Orem’s theory, I believe that self-care involves performing activities to maintain health and well-being. The theory has guided me in providing patient care since I plan nursing interventions that will assist patients in achieving self-care by considering their capacity and health needs (Yip, 2021). Besides, I assess patients’ ability to perform self-care activities to determine if the interventions I deliver will be wholly compensatory, partly compensatory, or supportive-educative. For completely incapacitated patients, I perform activities for the individual. For partly incapacitated patients, I assist them in performing shared activities or help them develop the ability to act on their behalf.

Conclusion

Nursing theories define what nurses do for patients and the rationale for what they do. Nurses apply theories in practice to deliver optimal patient care and evaluate patient outcomes. They can be used to plan and implement nursing care, make changes to interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes. Orem’s Self Care Model is the theory that best reflects my view that nurses should help patients in activities that will help them attain self-care
