Overview of the Emerging Technology

            The selected emerging technology in healthcare is the use of smartphone applications for glycemic control and management in diabetes. The development of mobile technologies for health have offered new ways of chronic disease management. An example is the smartphone applications that offer convenience, cost efficiency, and interactive environments for diabetes management. Unlike web-based systems for diabetes management, smartphones provide patients with benefits such as ease use and portability for continuous glucose monitoring. Smartphone applications have demonstrated effectiveness in glycemic control in patients with diabetes. For example, the study by Zhang et al., (2019) showed that smartphone applications effectively reduced HbA1c levels in patients with diabetes at 3 and 6 months. Similar findings are reported in a multi-national study conducted by Kebede et al., (2019). Results obtained from 549 people with type 1 diabetes and 210 with type 2 diabetes showed that smartphone applications for continuous glucose monitoring were associated with improved dietary self-care behavior, self-management confidence, and HbA1c among the participants. Therefore, the emerging technology improves treatment outcomes in diabetes.

Ethical or Legal Issues

            The use of smartphone applications in glycemic control is associated with significant ethical and legal issues. One of them are issues related to data integrity. Smartphone applications store patient data such as demographic information, disease status, and glycemic values over time. There is an increased risk of data access by unauthorized parties with the use of these technologies. Despite their benefits in diabetes management, concerns have been raised on the risk of loss of data privacy and confidentiality with their use. The other issue is improper use of the technologies by diabetic patients. Accordingly, the effectiveness of the technology use is largely dependent on the knowledge and skills of the patients. Poor use may result in ineffective diabetes management, hence, affecting treatment outcomes (Maher et al., 2019). Therefore, strategies to address these issues should be adopted.

Nurse’s Informatics Role

            Nurses play crucial informatics roles in the use of smartphone applications for glycemic management and control. One of the roles is patient educators. They educate the patients on the safe and effective use of the technology for optimum glycemic control. They also educate them about strategies to ensure data integrity. The other role is following up patients to determine the efficacy of the technology in diabetes management. The follow-up facilitates the identification of issues that should be addressed for optimum treatment outcomes (Flynn et al., 2018).

Role of Workflow Analysis, Human Factors, and User-Centered Design

            Workflow analysis, human factors, and user-centered design concepts apply to smartphone technologies used for glycemic control. The technology should be easy to use by patients. They should provide accurate, timely information to aid in decision-making on disease management. The technology should also be safe and secure. It should protect the integrity of the patient’s data. The system should also enhance interaction between different healthcare providers to enhance the work of care provision.

            Smartphone applications are emerging technologies that improve treatment outcomes in diabetic patients. The technology improves glycemic control, self-management, and patients’ confidence in the disease management process. Ethical and legal issues affect the extensive use of smartphone technologies for glycemic control. Design concepts such as user-centeredness and workflow analysis should be considered in the development of technologies for glycemic control.
