I encountered a female patient who presented with sneezing, palate itching, rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, loss of smell, and red, teary eyes. The patient got my attention because she had an injected, swollen conjunctiva and excessive tearing. Consequently, I conducted a HEENT assessment and examined the nose using a nasal speculum. Positive findings included thin, watery secretions and a swollen nasal mucosa with a pale, bluish-gray color. I informed the physician of these findings, and after further assessment, the patient was diagnosed with Rhinitis.

Potential Difficulties

When completing the HEENT assessment, I asked the patient about the age of onset of symptoms and if these symptoms have occurred constantly since onset. I also inquired about the time pattern of symptoms and if the symptoms occur at a consistent level throughout the year or only in specific seasons (Nur Husna et al., 2022). In addition, asking the patient about the history of environmental exposures was important to identify specific allergic triggers.

            The Christian worldview supports the steps I took since I helped to alleviate the patient’s symptoms by assessing the patient and informing the physician. The patient was prescribed medications to alleviate the symptoms, which eased her discomfort. This demonstrates compassion since it improves her quality of life.
