            Social factors such as personal and professional values influence both individual and population health. Everyone has unique personal values that were instilled to them since time of birth. The values are both intergenerational and cultural, and include our actions as well as behaviors. The personal values influence individual and population health in some ways. First, they influence health-related decisions. Values rooted on cultural ideologies influence the uptake of healthy behaviors such as those related to dietary habits in populations. Values also affect the individual’s ability to acknowledge and embrace lifestyle and behavioral changes to improve health outcomes (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018). Professional values also influence the population’s health. Accordingly, professional values such as respect, dignity, and honesty safeguard the rights and interests of the populations. Nurses and other healthcare providers embrace care interventions that minimize any harm to individuals and populations and optimize care outcomes (Borstad et al., 2018).

            My worldview influences the way I provide health care at both the individual and population level. Part of my philosophy as a nurse entails the consideration of patients, individuals, families, and populations as unique beings with needs that can be met independently and in assistance by healthcare providers. This philosophy guides my actions such as assisting patients gain independence in meeting their health-related needs. I also consider patients as individuals with rights and interests that must be respected in the care process (Bleda et al., 2020).             Politics influence health for both the individual and entire populations. Politics shape economic, environmental, and social conditions that in turn affect the health of individuals and populations. One of the ways in which politics affect population health can be seen on healthcare policies. Politics influence the healthcare policies to address the prioritized needs of the population. Investment decisions in health are guided by the crucial population needs, hence, their health outcomes. Politics also influence the allocation of resources for individual and population health. In this case, policymaking takes into consideration the severity of needs of the population and allocates the scarce public health resources to address them (McCartney et al., 2019). Unfair distribution of resources affects the health outcomes at the individual and population levels.

            The DNP can have positive impact on individual and population health through policy and advocacy. First, a doctoral prepared nurse can participate in policy-related issues affecting individuals and populations. An example is through policy assessment, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation to inform the need for policies in addressing population needs. The DNP nurse also acts as a population advocate in policy-related issues. They ensure that the adopted policies are appropriate to the identified and prioritized needs of the population. DNP nurses also ensure the adopted policies address the existing barriers to healthcare and social determinants of health (Cinaroglu, 2019; Gkiouleka et al., 2018). For example, they ensure that the healthcare policies increase the population’s access to healthcare through expanded medical insurance coverage and enhancing affordability of healthcare services. Therefore, DNP nurses should explore the different ways in which they can contribute positively to individual and population health.
