Reflection Course Discussion Essay
There are many different nursing theories, but some of the most notable ones in this course included Florence Nightingale’s theory of health as balance, Virginia Henderson’s conceptual model of nursing, Dorothea Orem’s self-care model, Jean Watson’s human caring theory, and Hildegard Peplau’s interpersonal theory of nursing. Each of these theories has contributed valuable insights into the nature of nursing and the care of patients (Hoeck & Delmar, 2018). I met the understanding of these nursing theories and fundamental frameworks by completing the required readings and participating in class discussion. I also utilized the resources provided to me, including the syllabus, lecture notes, and class website. In addition, I attended all classes and complied with attendance policies. Overall, I believe that I successfully met the objectives of this course. I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned from such an experienced and knowledgeable instructor.

During the nursing course, I learned to apply different nursing theoretical frameworks to real-world situations. This process of critical thinking helped me develop a deeper understanding of how each framework applies to different situations. In addition, by critically thinking about the different frameworks, I was able to creatively come up with solutions that best fit the unique needs of each individual patient. This creativity will continue to serve me well as a nurse, and will help me provide compassionate and individualized care for all patients I will interact with.
I developed competency in evaluating nursing concepts, models, and theories for use in nursing practice through discussions and class activities. I was able to apply what I learned to current nursing practice. One of the most important aspects of being a nurse is being able to evaluate the latest information and research on nursing concepts, models, and theories in order to make informed decisions about patient care. Through discussions and class activities, I was able to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to critically evaluate information and make well-informed decisions about my practice. Overall, this course has provided me with the knowledge to critically analyze and appraise different nursing frameworks so that I can apply the most appropriate one to my practice. I am confident that I have the necessary skills to make sound decisions about patient care based on current evidence.
The nursing course materials changed my nursing professional practice, specifically, these materials changed my perceptions about different nursing practices. Additionally, the materials provided me with the knowledge on how to use different theories to enhance nursing practices. The nursing profession is constantly evolving and nursing course materials must be updated to reflect these changes (Merino et al., 2018). Professional practice standards are regularly revised and updated as new evidence emerges. For example, the role of the nurse has evolved to include more patient-centered care. As nurses, we must continuously update our knowledge and skills in order to provide the best possible care for our patients. We must also stay current with changes in policy and practice so that we can advocate for our patients when necessary. Nursing course materials provide a valuable foundation for learning about the latest evidence-based practices and standards of care.
Nursing theory provides a framework for understanding the phenomena of nursing and guides the professional practice of nurses. Theories can help me make sense of the complex reality of nursing and provide a basis for decisions about practice. Nursing theories are developed through systematic observation and analysis of nursing phenomena. Theories are tested against clinical experience and research evidence and are revised as needed (Smith, 2019). They provide a basis for designing, conducting, and evaluating nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes. Theory-guided practice is more likely to result in optimal patient outcomes. A nurse who understands the underlying concepts of a theory can use that knowledge to select appropriate interventions, assess their effectiveness, modify them as needed, and evaluate patient responses.
