Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal: Identification of Nursing Practice Problem Essay
Part 1:
The selected nursing practice problem is catheter-associated urinary tract infections. I selected this issue because of its high prevalence in healthcare organizations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 75% of urinary tract infections that patients develop are because of urinary catheter (CDC, 2019). Catheter-associated urinary tract infection rate in the USA is high. For example, it accounts for at least 1 million cases annually in America. They are also the most common cause of bloodstream infections. Treating catheter-associated urinary tract infections is expensive. Statistics show that the costs associated with the infections range between $115 million to $1.82 billion annually (Werneburg, 2022). Factors such as the duration of an indwelling urinary catheter, use of aseptic techniques, deiabetes, and age are the risk factors for catheter-urinary tract infections. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections have immense burden on the affected populations. They increase the costs of healthcare secondary to prolonged hospitalization and need for additional treatment and risk for premature mortality (Seyhan Ak & Özbaş, 2018). Catheter-urinary tract infections are part of the safety and quality issues in nursing practice. Nurses can adopt evidence-based interventions to minimize and prevent their occurrence in the hospitalized populations (Yu et al., 2020). As a result, it is an issue of great relevance to nursing since nurses are primarily involved in the adoption of care interventions to minimize its occurrence in their practice.

Part II: In the table below, describe the population and the intervention. (You will continue drafting the PICOT, completing the shaded areas in Topic 3.)
PICOT Question | ||
P | Population | Hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheter |
I | Intervention | Nurses education about prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections |
C | Comparison | No intervention |
O | Outcome | Reduction in rates of catheter-associated urinary tract infections |
T | Timeframe | Six months |
PICOT | Among hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheter, does training nurses on prevention of prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections reduce its rate as compared to no intervention within six months?

Problem Statement | Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are crucial concerns in nursing and healthcare. Hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheters are increasingly at a risk of developing this problem. Catheter-asociated urinary tract infections have huge disease burden on the patients, as seen from increased costs of care, prolonged hospitalization, and increased risk of complications such as septicemia (Werneburg, 2022).Training and educating nurses on the prevention of these infections is an effective intervention. However, it has not been adopted in the practice site, hence, the focus of the proposed project.

Learners will select a valid nursing practice problem for an evidence-based practice project proposal. The project will be completed in sections, beginning in NUR-550 and culminating in a final written paper detailing the evidence-based practice proposal in NUR-590.
The purpose of this assignment is to select a relevant nursing practice problem for your evidence-based practice project proposal. To identify a relevant problem, consider problems generally faced in nursing practice (coordination of health care, assessment, education, patient support, trauma prevention, recovery, health screenings, etc.). Use the “PICOT Draft” template to complete this assignment.
Use a national, state or local population health care database to research indicators of disparity. Choose a mortality/morbidity indicator to identify a clinical problem or issue that you want to explore pertaining to a population of focus. Use this indicator to begin to formulate a PICOT statement.
Refer to the “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview” document for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.
