Professional Practice R/T Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care & Ensuring Human Dignity in Patient Care

            This practicum experience made me realize patient population in the US is highly diverse, leading to the need to ensure culturally responsive healthcare. I noticed that people from ethnic minorities tend to encounter numerous cultural and religious hurdles in accessing quality healthcare. I also realized that provision of culturally unresponsive care can potentially limit the access and quality of care by patients because it impedes communication, relationship, and trust between patients and clinicians (Claeys et al., 2021). It also ruins the necessary collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients in creating a treatment plan. Regarding respect for human integrity, I discovered that the essence of maintaining the integrity of human dignity when delivering healthcare is to ensure better health outcomes (Stephen Ekpenyong et al., 2021). This concept ensures that patients get access to better healthcare services, they are treated without discrimination, their privacy is maintained, and given care and compassion without considering their conditions.

            Personal strengths concerning practices of culturally sensitive care is developing an accommodative environment for all patients without considering their cultural or religious backgrounds. This is critical to winning the trust of patients, leading to increased medication compliance (Benuto et al., 2021). On the other hand, personal strength relating to upholding human integrity in the care of patients entails ensuring that every patient I attend gets the appropriate healthcare services, showing them compassion regardless of their conditions, ensuring their privacy, and being non-judgmental to them. However, my weakness relating to practices of culturally sensitive care is the occasional ignoring of patients’ cultural and religious values when I believe it is detrimental to their wellbeing. On the other hand, my weakness concerning upholding the integrity of human dignity is that sometimes I fail to recognize the intrinsic value of my patients, thus providing care that does respect their value.
