Meeting Program Outcome 2: Creating a Caring Environment
The course has consistently highlighted the essence of patient-centered care as a prominent focal point. During our clinical experiences, we encountered the task of embracing a patient-centered approach, which entailed actively engaging patients in the process of care planning and decision-making. During a case study pertaining to a patient diagnosed with diabetes, a collaborative effort was undertaken with the patient to formulate an individualized diabetes treatment strategy, taking into account their unique lifestyle and personal preferences. This demonstrates how the course has provided us with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish a compassionate atmosphere that improves the effectiveness of healthcare results by prioritizing the patient as the focal point of care.
The incorporation of ethical decision-making, which is considered a fundamental aspect of providing high-quality healthcare (Haddad & Geiger, 2023), was included in our educational program. During our educational experience, we were instructed to take into account the ethical aspects associated with our actions, specifically in relation to upholding patients’ autonomy, maintaining confidentiality, and obtaining informed consent. The aforementioned ethical standards of care play a pivotal role in fostering a compassionate atmosphere that promotes patient dignity and worth, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes (Olejarczyk & Young, 2022). Therefore, the training has made a significant contribution to our capacity to fulfill Program Outcome 2.
Meeting Advanced-Level Nursing Competency: AACN Essentials Domain 9
The emphasis on ethical conduct in nursing practice has been noteworthy within the AACN Essentials Domain 9 (Giddens et al., 2022). We examined the ways in which current policies affect patient care and talked about possible changes. For example, we considered the equitable distribution of scarce resources when examining the ethical implications of resource allocation during a pandemic. I was able to contribute to a more equitable healthcare system by using this methodology to evaluate policies and practices critically and offer more moral alternatives.
We had multiple clinical leadership experiences during the training. I had the chance to set an example for ethical behavior by standing up for patient safety and rights. Once, I saw a colleague disregard a patient’s request for an analgesic. I took responsibility for confronting this unethical activity, discussing the significance of rapid pain management and ensuring the patient’s requirements were satisfied. I promoted ethical behavior in a leadership capacity by stepping in and promoting high-quality patient care.
Meeting NONPF Ethics Competency
Incorporating ethical concepts into the decision-making process has emerged as a central element in the NONPF Ethics Competency (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2022). We have continuously received instruction on the importance of incorporating ethical concepts into all facets of our professional endeavors. In an illustrative case study pertaining to a patient with a terminal illness, ethical concepts were employed to effectively negotiate intricate decisions concerning end-of-life matters, guaranteeing that the decision-making process was driven by the patient’s individual values and beliefs. This intervention facilitated the establishment of an ethically sound milieu for the provision of patient care. Furthermore, our curriculum placed a strong emphasis on the assessment of ethical ramifications associated with decision-making processes to ensure that we consistently make morally upright choices that are in line with the well-being, confidentiality, and trust of patients.
Conclusion
In summary, this course has played a pivotal role in cultivating our skills as nursing students at an advanced level. The approach has enhanced our comprehension of establishing a compassionate setting to achieve favorable health results, facilitated the attainment of advanced-level nursing proficiencies outlined in the AACN Essentials Domain 9, and corresponded with the NONPF Ethics Competency, all of which hold significant importance for our forthcoming nursing profession. By deliberately integrating patient-centered care, ethical decision-making, and incorporating ethical concepts into our decision-making processes, we enhance our ability to make meaningful contributions to the healthcare system and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. The course has provided a solid basis for our future in the field of nursing, equipping us with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
