My capstone project change presentation using PowerPoint explored the effects of fall management education, knowledge and awareness among nurses and patients in nursing homes. As one of the prevalent adverse events in healthcare setting, existing studies demonstrate that falls lead to negative effects on quality of life for patients with a significant number getting disabilities due to permanent and deep injuries while it increases the cost of healthcare (Cho et al., 2020). Imperatively, I presented the capstone project to the unit manager alongside the nursing supervisor of the nursing home and long term care facility where I conducted my practicum. My preceptor was also in attendance. I began the presentation by giving a rationale for selecting this topic. The audience understood my choice of the topic as a safety concern and one that aligns with my specialty of dealing with geriatric population. My presentation was aimed at enhancing interventions to reduce falls and the risk for falls in the facility for better living conditions for the older adults. The presentation also entailed the expected outcomes of the interventions like a reduction of falls among the targeted individuals, increased collaboration within the team, and better outcomes for the patients (Díaz et al., 2020). The presentation also highlighted how the team or facility could evaluate the outcomes of the project and improve where necessary to suit its needs.
I got feedback from the audience, the home manager, the nursing supervisor and my preceptor as well as questions from the senior nurses. For instance, both the home manager and nursing supervisor acknowledged that the project was a timely initiative that would allow them to implement new changes to reduce falls. They also acknowledged the high rates of falls in the facility and agreed that they will develop a team to implement the measures through my input and direction. My preceptor was elated and thrilled with the presentation. However, he emphasized that implementation would be critical to develop better teamwork and collaboration. The other members asked a variety of questions about the project and I promptly answered to their satisfaction.
The inter-professional collaboration and experience will have a positive effect on my professional practice in the future since it means that I can attain more when I work in a team. This implies that I will strive to develop teams when implementing or developing such initiatives to enhance their successful execution to improve patient care (Han et al., 2020). The experience also demonstrates the critical role that all team members play to attain improved patient care in any setting.
