The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Priorities
Nurses play a significant role as medical researchers and “knowledge workers.” According to AlKhaldi et al. (2018), research entails the systematic collection, description, analysis, and interpretation of data to develop knowledge of health challenges and improve health. In this sense, healthcare professionals and institutions are responsible for generating high-quality, valuable knowledge in restoring, promoting, and maintaining the health status of populations.
The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is one of the 27 institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) tasked to apply nursing research as a fundamental tool for promoting population health and addressing multiple healthcare challenges that compromise people’s health and well-being. The NINR’s mission is to “lead nursing research to solve pressing health challenges and inform practice and policy-optimizing health and advancing health equity into the future” (National Institute of Nursing Research, n.d.). This mission prompts the agency to prioritize research on five profound topics: health equity, social determinants of health (SDOH), population and community health, prevention and health promotion, and systems and care models.
From a personal perspective, these topics are broad and cover almost all issues prevalent in current healthcare systems. For example, health equity and social determinants of health (SDOH) explain the sources of health disparities, fragmented care in rural and urban areas, and disproportionate effects of health issues across populations. On the other hand, population and community health focus on how different people perceive care acceptability, appropriateness, and utilization amidst population-specific healthcare demands.
Thirdly, prevention and health promotion encompass all levels of disease prevention, self-management interventions, and collaborative models for promoting care. Finally, systems and care models accommodate current topics like the widespread use of advanced technologies, the need for patient-centered care, care reimbursement models, and all mechanisms for care delivery. Therefore, I agree with these research activities because they are far-reaching and reflective of all current healthcare issues and concerns.
