Nursing students create a portfolio to track their professional goals, competencies, accomplishments, and skills. They present the portfolio to future employers to show who they are and their professional achievements. Therefore, a nursing portfolio helps nurses to secure a job within their career in the future. This discussion will focus on categories that will be utilized to develop a portfolio at an early stage of the nursing career. Additionally, it will include the type of portfolio that would be preferred to present oneself to recruiters in the future.

I would utilize various categories to develop a portfolio at an early stage of my nursing career. These categories will enable me to prepare information that will reveal my identity, experience, and professional qualifications to future recruiters. First, I would utilize the preparation level and type of degrees pursued. This section would reveal my academic qualification to potential employers in the future. Secondly, the portfolio would include specialty certifications and professional licensure to confirm to the recruiters that I am a qualified nurse practitioner, thus qualified for job opportunities within my area of specialization. More so, it would capture incidents of community involvement or volunteer experience, including my role during the exercise and hours served. Hospital involvement would also be included in the portfolio, presenting evidence of any extra projects I participated in. Furthermore, the portfolio would consist of my health records, including all immunizations and current mental and physical health state. This section would indicate that I am fit to perform a particular job without compromising my clients’ health. The portfolio would also include a list of a professional organization with documents to support my membership. Finally, it would capture professional conferences, and in-services attended accompanied with supporting documentation.

I prefer to use a web-based portfolio to present myself to potential employers in the future. Various categories of my portfolio would be selected in an electronic or web-based portfolio. I prefer a web-based portfolio over a document due to the multiple benefits associated with an online portfolio. First, using an electronic portfolio enhances lifelong learning and assessment for nursing students, thereby enabling them to develop skills, knowledge, and strategies in their areas of specialization. Secondly, electronic portfolios would allow students to keep up with the advancement in technology and enhance their mastery of computer use in the learning process (Zulfikar, 2016). These skills are applied while pursuing their nursing programs and in their nursing careers in the future. Employers would prefer to hire someone who is conversant with modern technology due to the incorporation of technology into nursing education and practices. According to Ahmed (2019), information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been incorporated into clinical practices to support healthcare delivery. Furthermore, the practicality of electronic portfolios is relatively higher than that of paper-based portfolios (Zulfikar, 2016). It is relatively easy to make some changes in a web-based portfolio than in a document. Additionally, potential employers can search for particular information during an interview. Furthermore, electronic portfolios support uniform assessment of all learners within an institution without any form of bias. Amplifying one’s online presence is another key benefit of a web-based portfolio. Individuals promote their brands through online presence, thus increasing their employment opportunities. Finally, nursing students use e-portfolio to monitor their progress towards attaining the set career goals in their respective nursing programs.
