Discussion: The Psychiatric Evaluation and Evidence-Based Rating Scales
Assessment tools have two primary purposes: 1) to measure illness and diagnose clients, and 2) to measure a client’s response to treatment. Often, you will find that multiple assessment tools are designed to measure the same condition or response. Not all tools, however, are appropriate for use in all clinical situations. You must consider the strengths and weaknesses of each tool to select the appropriate assessment tool for your client. For this Discussion, as you examine the assessment tool assigned to you by the Course Instructor, consider its use in psychotherapy.

Discussion: The Psychiatric Evaluation and Evidence-Based Rating Scales

Assessment tools in psychiatry can either be psychometric or non-psychometric. They usually broadly serve two purposes – to help with diagnosis and also to assess the client’s progress or recovery (APA, 2013). This paper discusses the properties of such a psychometric assessment tool.

Three Important Components of the Psychiatric Interview

Three important components of a psychiatric interview are psychiatric history, suicide and violence risk assessment, and the history of present illness (Carlat, 2017; Sadock et al., 2015).  These elements are important because first, the psychiatric history helps with determining if the current symptoms are a relapse or a new mental illness. Second, suicide and violence risk assessment helps in determining if the client is a danger to themselves and others. Third, the history of present illness (HPI) helps in understanding the course and duration of symptoms as well as their characteristics.

Psychometric Properties of the Rating Scale

First, the rating scale has got test elements that are scored objectively by the assessor. Objectivity is therefore one of the most important of the scale’s psychometric properties. The test is also structured and the scoring follows a certain pattern. Lastly but not least, the scale is not influenced by the assessor’s views or prejudices.

Appropriate Time for Use

The appropriate time for use of this tool during the interview is after taking the comprehensive history and performing the mental status examination or MSE. The scale is helpful to a psychiatric nurse’s psychiatric assessment because it gives them an insight into the nature of the client’s illness and progression of the condition. This helps with deciding on the pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic interventions to be used.
