Week 7 Discussion

Technology integration into patient care has allowed nurses to use many devices, systems, and tools to improve health outcomes. However, how and when nurses use smartphones has ethical and legal implications, hence the need to comply with the established guidelines (Hitti et al., 2021). A nurse colleague using a personal cell phone to take a photo of a patient’s wound and sharing the image with a primary care provider via text breaches the confidentiality principle due to the lack of consent. In nursing, confidentiality restricts access and unauthorized use of personal information. As Tegegne et al. (2022) noted, the right to confidentiality gives patients the privilege of their data being kept secret and only disclosed when they authorize it. Respecting confidentiality also promotes autonomy since it allows the patient to exercise self-determination and ensure they are part of key decision-makers regarding their health.

Although using personal devices is highly controlled through policies and laws, nurses can use them to support safe patient practices. According to de Jong et al. (2020), nurses can use smartphone technology to locate patient-centered care information, communicate with team members, and share authorized patient data. For instance, medical apps like Medscape guide nurses on medication administration and safe procedures. The informed and ethical use of personal devices is a foundation of optimal communication between team members, safe patient care, and healthy patient-provider relationships.

Organizations apply different policies to regulate the use of personal communication devices in patient care settings. Such policies outline privacy essentials, protection (safety), and ethical use of personal data (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). Consequently, the organizational policy would reveal whether the nurse adhered to confidentiality guidelines and whether information sharing was used to benefit the patient (beneficence). Such policies should also include disciplinary measures for the nurse and recommended practices to ensure the safe, legal, and ethical use of personal communication devices. In this case, it should be clear how, when, and where personal devices can be used for patient-related purposes and the implications of such practices.
