TO PREPARE:
- Identify the practice problem as the focus of your Discussion post. You may use the same practice problem from earlier weeks or a different one.
- Review the chapter on practice questions in the Dang and Dearholt text and the Week 7 Media. With guidance from the Learning Resources, cast your practice problem as a critical question.
- Search the Walden Library for 4-5 scholarly articles that address your critical question.
- View the resource for synthesizing the evidence found in week 7 learning resources. Share the component of the evidence synthesis process that resonated with you. Explain how that component is reflected in your synthesis of the evidence (articles you selected to support your practice problem and critical question).
- Analyze the articles to identify evidence that would guide quality improvement.
- Return to the stakeholders that were the audience for your Module 3 Assignment. Identify the specific quality improvement component in the evidence. Then consider how you would present it to that set of stakeholders to secure agreement and action.
With these thoughts in mind …
BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 7
Post a brief explanation of your critical question. Then, synthesize the 4-5 articles you identified that address your critical question. Using the same language you would use with stakeholders, explain the critical question and the value of addressing it as a quality improvement initiative. Be specific. Cite the scholarly articles and other resources to support your post.

NURS 8114 Week 7 Discussion
The identified practice problem is suicide, usually attributed to mental health problems. My critical question regarding the topic is: Does promoting mental health awareness reduce the incidence of suicide?
Wasserman et al. (2020) assert that interventions to enhance mental health awareness, foster effective coping skills, alleviate primary and secondary post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and reduce social isolation should be implemented. The article further states that mental health screenings and assessments should be scheduled and referral to evidence‐based treatments be ensured. According to Que et al. (2020), early detection and timely intervention of persons with psychiatric disorders and suicide behaviors can reduce suicide rates.
Joseph and Bhandari (2021) recommend online training programs for raising awareness about mental health and suicide and targeting youth in schools. Moreover, the article emphasizes the importance of responsible media reporting to avoid sensationalism, which can negatively affect mental health and suicide. Henry (2021) explains that strategies should be sought to increase mental health awareness, reduce mental health stigma, improve accessibility to quality mental health services, and promote research to improve innovative treatments.
Suicide is a growing public health concern not only in our country but globally. However, the issue can be mitigated by promoting mental health awareness and care among individuals across the lifespan. Individuals who face barriers to accessing mental health treatment and those reluctant to seek help due to the stigma attached to mental and substance abuse disorders and suicidal thoughts are at risk of suicidal behavior. Therefore, an EBP intervention will be crucial in lowering suicide rates by increasing mental health awareness to reduce social stigma and increasing individuals’ access to mental health preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.
