            Under the guidance of my preceptor throughout my early nursing practice, I acquired several communication skills that I still use today. When caring for middle-aged adult patients with many medical illnesses, I used several communication tools to enhance contact and the quality of treatment. These communication tools include the SBAR Nurse Communication Tool, the BATHE Protocol, and the Patient Teach-Back (Moore et al., 2020).

SBAR is an abbreviation for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation. It is a structured communication strategy designed to facilitate proper information flow between two individuals (Moore et al., 2020). The BATHE protocol, similar to SBAR, aims to comfort the patient, alleviate suffering, and enhance the nurse-patient connection. Utilizing patient teach-back is a successful communication technique to confirm the patient’s comprehension of the information a nurse conveys. Briefly, the nurse provides the patient with health information or instructions and then requests that the patient re-explain the information in their own words.

To enhance technology in this scenario, all the communication methods above may be integrated into a HIPAA-compliant text messaging platform. This is the healthcare counterpart to consumer instant messaging networks like WhatsApp (Anne Griffin Perry et al., 2021). The platforms adhere to HIPAA standards and provide many features to enhance communication among nurses, patients, physicians, and other care team members. These platforms transmit crucial patient information, such as test results, medical photographs, and patient interactions, to care team members.

Nursing technologies provide immediate communication with particular care team members, coordinate consultations, and effectively relay pertinent information to other nurses during shift changes (Implement Teamwork and Communication, n.d.). Nurses may communicate with patients post-hospitalization via individual or group conversations using text, audio, or video calls. Healthcare institutions using this communication technology have shown improved efficiency, productivity, patient engagement, satisfaction, reduced hospital stays, quicker patient flow, fewer medical mistakes, and better patient results.
