            Personality disorders are mental health problems that affect a significant proportion of the population. Personality disorders affect the patient’s health, well-being, and functioning. Psychiatric mental health practitioners implement evidence-based interventions that help patients develop effective coping strategies and minimize the impact of the disorders on their quality of life. Therefore, this paper analyzes a therapeutic approach for antisocial personality disorder, its diagnosis, and the meaning of a therapeutic relationship in psychiatry.

Selected Personality Disorder

            Antisocial personality disorder is the selected disorder for this essay. Antisocial personality disorder is one of the four types of cluster B personality disorders. Patients with the disorder lack remorse for their behaviors that violate others’ rights. The DSM-5 has developed criteria for diagnosing patients with antisocial personality disorder. A patient is diagnosed with the disorder if he has symptoms, including failure to obey norms and laws, lying or manipulating others for self-gain, and demonstrating impulsive behaviors. Patients also report irritability and aggression toward others, disregarding safety for themselves and others, being irresponsible, and lacking remorse for their behaviors (Akçay & Akçay, 2020; Holzer et al., 2022). The patient should be at least 18 years old, had conduct disorder before 15 years, or the symptoms cannot be attributed to mental health problems such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

A Therapeutic Approach

            Family therapy is one of the therapeutic approaches to the treatment of antisocial personality disorder. Family therapy can be used to administer psychotherapeutic interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy to patients diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. The effectiveness of family therapy stems from the fact that family dynamics play a crucial role in the development of antisocial personality disorder (Varghese et al., 2020). Family therapy complements the treatment outcomes if psychiatric mental health practitioners are considering individual therapy for antisocial personality disorder.

            Evidence-based data shows that family therapy is effective in helping patients understand the effect of their behaviors on others. This understanding is important since it promotes behavioral change. It also challenges patients to be actively involved in exploring and adopting healthy behaviors that will promote cohesion with other family members. Patients tend to be more secure emotionally, physically, and socially when their disorders are addressed in a family setting. They can benefit from the readily available support from their family members, which facilitates the recovery process. Family members also understand the patients better than the therapist does (Marzilli et al., 2021; Visdómine-Lozano, 2022). As a result, it is easy to address the patient’s difficulties in different aspects of their lives when family therapy is adopted.

A Therapeutic Relationship in Psychiatry

            A therapeutic relationship in psychiatry is a relationship characterized by the healthcare provider collaborating with patients to achieve a common goal. A therapeutic relationship facilitates a close bond between patients and their healthcare providers. This relationship is important for patient empowerment, engagement, satisfaction, and the realization of sustainable outcomes in the treatment of antisocial personality disorder (Moreno-Poyato et al., 2021). I will share a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder in a non-judgmental manner. I will adopt openness and educate the patient about the disorder to avoid him/her feeling odd in the community. I will also demonstrate empathy when sharing the diagnosis with the patient (Hartley et al., 2020). Sharing the diagnosis with an individual is easy compared to sharing it in a family or a group session. The psychiatrist should ensure informed consent is obtained when sharing the diagnosis in a family or a group. There is also the risk of loss of confidentiality and privacy of data in a group or a family setting.
