Core Epidemiologic Functions

Surveillance is a key epidemiologic core activity in my community. It entails the continuous and systematic gathering, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of health data. This is done to strategize, execute, and assess public health activities. This fundamental role is apparent through diverse channels, including disease reporting systems, healthcare institution records, and monitoring of health indices. Surveillance is essential for detecting and tracking the transmission of diseases, finding patterns, and evaluating the effectiveness of public health measures (Black et al., 2019). Surveillance is a top priority in my community due to the significance of promptly identifying and addressing infectious diseases to prevent outbreaks and protect public health.

Statistics play a crucial role in this setting by allowing for the measurement of disease burden, identification of people at high risk, and assessment of the success of interventions. According to Matranga et al. (2021), statistical analysis offers a solid foundation for making decisions based on data, enabling public health professionals to allocate resources effectively, prioritize interventions, and develop focused strategies to tackle specific health problems in the community. Essentially, statistics are a fundamental basis for well-informed and efficient public health policies and procedures.

Ethics in Health Care

During a recent nursing practice, I faced a moral conundrum about the issue of healthcare accessibility. An uninsured patient needed an expensive yet potentially life-preserving medical intervention. The presence of ethical relativism became evident when examining the financial consequences associated with obtaining healthcare treatments. According to Aluko-Arowolo et al. (2022), ethical relativism posits that morality is dependent upon the cultural norms of an individual. The patient contended that financial limitations should not impede access to essential medical treatments, highlighting the significance of the right to healthcare. On the other hand, the healthcare facility followed a policy that mandated immediate payment for elective procedures, demonstrating a utilitarian approach that emphasizes its financial sustainability.

To address this ethical challenge, a potential solution could entail supporting the patient’s right to undergo surgery while actively seeking alternative means of financing, such as soliciting support from charitable organizations or exploring financial aid programs. This answer is in accordance with a deontological ethical stance, which emphasizes the obligation to prioritize the patient’s well-being and respect the concept of fairness in healthcare. Deontological ethics, as exemplified by Immanuel Kant’s works, asserts that specific activities (such as advocating for healthcare accessibility) are essentially morally correct, irrespective of their consequences (Barrow & Khandhar, 2023). This approach aligns with the inherent worth of human health and well-being.
